What is low-risk neuroblastoma?

Doctors use risk groups to help guide treatment for children with neuroblastoma. Low-risk neuroblastoma typically means the cancer has features that make it less likely to need intensive treatment.

Some low-risk tumours, particularly in babies and very young children, can shrink or even disappear on their own. In these cases, doctors may recommend regular scans and check-ups to monitor the tumour rather than immediate treatment.

Because every child's neuroblastoma is different, treatment plans are tailored to the individual. If treatment is needed, it may include surgery or, in some cases, chemotherapy.

Clinical trials are essential to improving treatments and survival rates for children with cancer.

But in the UK, setting up and delivering clinical trials is often too slow, meaning children with aggressive cancers like neuroblastoma could miss out on the most effective and potentially life-saving treatments.

So, what's causing the delays?

Delays can be caused by complex processes and the multiple approvals often needed across hospitals and networks before a trial can get underway.

That's where IMPACCT comes in, tackling the barriers that delay clinical trials and helping children access them sooner.

A recent Sunday Post article highlighted concerns about access to international clinical trials for children with cancer in the UK.

As we shared with the newspaper:

"...children with rare and aggressive cancers in the UK must not miss out on promising new therapies because our research and regulatory systems aren't sufficiently aligned with international partners."

For rare childhood cancers, international collaboration is essential. Patient populations are often too small for any one country to generate all the evidence needed in isolation, making global research partnerships vital to developing and testing new treatments.

The data collected through international neuroblastoma clinical trials has the potential to drive new discoveries and improve treatment options for children with neuroblastoma.

That's why we're funding a dedicated Data Manager at the St. Anna Children's Cancer Research Institute (CCRI) to help organise and securely share valuable clinical and genomic data, enabling researchers to investigate how neuroblastoma responds to treatment and helping to identify opportunities for more targeted and effective treatments for children.

Tomorrow, Matt, Simon and Tony set off on an incredible challenge, cycling over 950 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats in support of Solving Kids’ Cancer UK and The Worshipful Company of Arbitrators Charitable Trust.

Over the next two weeks, they’ll pedal from the southernmost tip of England to the northernmost point of Scotland, aiming to complete this epic LEJOG challenge by 4 August. Along the way, they’ll be joined by guest cyclists and supporters, helping to spur them on every mile of the journey.

From everyone at Solving Kids’ Cancer UK, we want to wish Matt, Simon and Tony the very best of luck. Thank you for taking on such an ambitious challenge and for supporting two fantastic causes along the way. Your determination, dedication and commitment will help make a real difference to children and families affected by cancer.

A huge congratulations to Juliet, Jennifer and Deanna, who completed the Peak District Ultra Challenge this weekend in support of Solving Kids' Cancer UK. 🎉

The trio took on an incredible 25km route through the stunning Peak District countryside, tackling challenging terrain and plenty of miles while raising vital funds to help children and families affected by childhood cancer.

We are so grateful for their determination, commitment and support. Every step they took will help us continue providing practical, emotional and financial support to families facing the unimaginable.
