Solving Kids' Cancer helps families affected by the most high-risk childhood cancers. Every week in the UK thirty children are diagnosed with some type of cancer. While we will be spreading our wings in the future, our focus will remain fixed on neuroblastoma – a very aggressive childhood cancer and the most likely to affect children in their first year of life. It is the most common cancer found in children under the age of 5, and most commonly diagnosed when it has progressed to a later stage. Even after successful treatment, 60% of children with high risk neuroblastoma will relapse, at which point there are very limited treatment options available for parents.

Alfred loved tending his vegetable garden. He dreamed of becoming a farmer one day. But at just four years old, he was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma.

Despite everything that followed, Alfred found joy in playing hide and seek, trips out with his family, and potting plants in his beloved garden. 💛

From the earliest days of Alfred’s diagnosis, our Family Support Team were there to provide practical guidance and emotional support to his family.

When Alfred relapsed in early 2025, we were there to support his family through the emotional weight of that news and the difficult decisions that followed.

Devastatingly, Alfred passed away in August 2025. But our support didn't stop. We stood beside his family through their grief, helping them navigate the unimaginable pain of losing their little boy.

Our support doesn’t end when a family’s world falls apart. That’s often when it matters most.

When Beatrice was diagnosed with low-risk neuroblastoma at just 10 months old, her family suddenly found themselves navigating a new and uncertain world.

Soon after, they contacted Solving Kids’ Cancer UK and found a community of people who understood what they were going through.

From meeting other families at our Neuroblastoma Parent Symposium to staying connected with our Family Support Team and joining us at our Family Fun Day, that support has continued throughout their journey.

As Beatrice’s parents told us:

“Connecting with the other families in similar situations to us definitely gave us a sense of belonging in this nasty neuroblastoma world.”

Now two and a half, Beatrice has scans every three months, and her most recent results showed that her neuroblastoma remains stable.

For Beatrice’s family, and families like hers, having someone there who understands can make a real difference.

Last year, our Family Support Team provided ongoing one-to-one support to 230 families affected by neuroblastoma.

Every member of our Family Support Team has experience of caring for a child with neuroblastoma, so they understand the realities families are facing.

From treatment information and practical help to emotional support and simply having someone to turn to, we're here throughout the journey.

This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we're shining a light on the support families need.

On Wednesday, we were honoured to stand alongside colleagues from Joseph’s Smile, Latch Welsh Children's Cancer Charity and Young Lives vs Cancer at the Kids Get Cancer Too Senedd reception, raising awareness of the impact childhood cancer has on families across Wales.

We highlighted the vital importance of research and why the upcoming Cancer Strategy for Wales must include dedicated commitments for children and young people.

This means investing in research and innovation, recognising that childhood and young people’s cancers are unique, and ensuring families across Wales have fair access to the latest opportunities in care and treatment.

Every child and young person with cancer deserves to benefit from progress in research and innovation – wherever they live in Wales. 💛

We have great news! Announcing a big step forward in neuroblastoma data...

Every neuroblastoma diagnosis generates valuable information. But so far, it hasn’t been gathered all together in one place. What if we could bring more of that information together, connect the dots and use it to help answer some of the biggest questions in neuroblastoma research? Now, we can take a major step towards doing exactly that.

Solving Kids’ Cancer UK and Neuroblastoma UK are proud to have jointly awarded £50,827 over five years to fund UK participation in SIOPEN Bioportal – a pioneering international resource designed to bring together all the important information surrounding neuroblastoma diagnoses which, together with the existing UK infrastructure collecting biological samples within Vivo biobank, has the potential to significantly advance neuroblastoma research.

Data underpins all our neuroblastoma research, and with this new funding, we are unlocking access to a lot more of it.

Better data. Better research. Better treatments. Better outcomes, from every diagnosis💛
