🚨 Too many young women are blocked from career progression before they reach the first rung of management.

Our new CMI Women research, in partnership with Young Women's Trust, Girlguiding, and Women@Tech, highlights a frustrating disconnect between ambition and opportunity.

📊 Our research found that 71% of 17 to 21-year-old women aspire to lead, but their potential is routinely stalled by structural barriers, unclear progression pathways and limited managerial support.

To boost UK productivity, we cannot leave talented women on the sidelines.

Leaders and policymakers must think beyond mentorship and offer young women active sponsorship, transparent progression routes, and the opportunity to build confidence through accredited training.

What happens when healthcare education looks beyond clinical skills to develop future healthcare leaders? 🏥

Our partner, University of East Anglia is pioneering a new approach to nursing education, by embedding the CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership into its BSc Adult, Children’s and Mental Health Nursing programmes. In doing so, they have become the UK’s first university to partner with CMI in this way to deliver nursing education.

From September 2026, students graduate from the BSc programmes with both an accredited nursing degree and a respected leadership qualification from CMI, recognising that nurses are increasingly expected to coordinate teams, contribute to quality improvement and help shape how services are delivered.

As Professor Christopher Burton, Dean of Health Sciences, explains:
"Nursing today is about much more than clinical expertise alone. They are increasingly expected to lead teams, manage services and help shape improvements."

This partnership reflects the growing importance of leadership and management in healthcare to drive service improvements and better patient care, aligning with the recently launched NHS Leadership and Management Framework.
