Stanley Welch - D. Jean-Baptiste - Barreleye

Sunday 21 June 2026
7:00 pm 10:00 pm

The Horse Hospital welcomes a programme of Chicago - London creative exchange, built upon experimentation. Each group explores the edges and interior of the song, but does so in ways wholey unique to themselves. Be prepared for introspection and total rhythm.
Stanley Welch is a musician and composer from rural Cornwall, based in Glasgow and London. Welch creates explosive and winding songs, turning over themselves, finding unexpected corners and avenues of form within the whole. He takes the classic notions of songwriting and lets his audience, alongside him, examine them under a microscope. Stanley Welch is one half of the London-based electronic record label NorthSouth records.

D. Jean-Baptiste is a performer from Chicago experimenting with song by any means necessary. No show is the same, no set follows the same arch. Songs stretch beyond their limit. Silence is a weapon.

Barreleye is a band currently straddling the Atlantic Ocean, with members based in both Chicago and London. Borne of the midwest, these three youngsters take on new worlds with hippy axes, frivolous ears, and steady tardiness, ever in the footsteps of the American Chicken. A sceneless, spineful amalgam, landlocked and poised to unlock your mind from the unstupid.

Dirar Kalash & Momoko Gill + Des Visages

Monday 15 June 2026
8:00 pm

An evening of sonic improvisation by multi-instrumentalists Dirar Kalash and Momoko Gill, accompanied by live AV and electronic experimntal duo Des Visages, amidst their European tour

——

Dirar Kalash’s work spans a wide range of musical and sonic practices within a variety of instrumental, compositional and improvisational contexts. He is mostly known for his politically driven soundscape / electro-acoustic project The Sonic Front, and the compositions we can’t breathe (for eric garner, george floyd, and frantz fanon) and by any means necessary (for Malcolm X).

Momoko Gill is a London-based composer, producer, drummer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist whose work moves fluidly between jazz, soul, electronic production, and experimental ambient textures. Raised in Japan in a family of musicians and music lovers, Gill took up drums and percussion to make herself heard amidst a pianist uncle, a guitarist brother, and a singer mother , before relocating to London where she studied anthropology and became embedded in the city’s vital experimental music community.
A self-taught drummer, producer, songwriter, and vocalist, she has brought her unique touch to collaborations with Matthew Herbert, Coby Sey, Tirzah, and Nadeem Din-Gabisi. Years of extensive touring as a drummer, keyboardist, and vocalist have honed her distinctive compositional and production instincts.

Des Visages is an experimental duo formed by Chilean musicians César Vidal (saxophone) and Jorge Care (electronics and visuals). Their work explores the interaction between acoustic, electronic, and visual elements through improvisation and real-time performance. In 2025, they released their debut EP in Geneva, Switzerland, premiered at the Black Box of the HEM and later presented at Fête de la Musique. In 2026, the duo recorded their second album, aleas, at the Dijktheater in Amsterdam, and the same year they’ve been touring accross Switzerland, France, The Netherlands, England and Denmark.

Superyacht at The Horse Hospital

Tuesday 16 June 2026
7:45 pm - 9:30 pm
Tickets £8-12

Superyacht is an ensemble of musicians in and around the free improvisation scene in London.

They interest themselves in acoustics, spatiality, indeterminacy, frequency relationships, great wealth and excessive consumption.

Like all superyachts they are neither here nor there, but are importantly quite large.

This debut performance at The Horse Hospital will present five new pieces ahead of a release on SN Variations later this year.

4 hours of specially selected hits and gems that accompany the sailing of boats through rivers of the rainforest, exhibiting a legacy of radio-based networks for the distribution of musical influences

“ From childhood, I was captivated by the sonic dialogue between the waters and banks of great rivers. Here’s an attempt at a playlist about the sonic journeys, upstream and downstream, from the Andes to the Atlantic, carrying and bringing music and memories.
A soundtrack that tells us about territories that have much more in common than it might seem.”

Mindwarcinema #2: The Arrival
(Unarius Academy of Science, 1980)

With Tanner Boyle and Mark Pilkington

Tickets via website.

“One of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time...
If you’d have shown me this in 1980, I think I would be signing the dotted line before you could even ask if I wanted to join.”
Letterboxd reviews

Shot on a shoestring budget by the San Diego’s Unarius Academy of Science in the late 1970s, The Arrival is a science fiction religious epic in miniature. With a mind and time-bending plot, dazzling special effects a soundtrack performed on home-made synthesisers, it’s a true one off in the history of cult cinema. If ABBA, Sun Ra and Ed Wood had joined forces with Douglas Trumbull, it might look something like this.

That it also happens to be a recruiting film for one of the most colourful spiritual movements to emerge from post WWII America, and its fascination with flying saucers, makes it all the more remarkable.

As an expression of America’s UFO culture, it stands in luminous contrast to the darker, paranoiac, conspiratorial turn that the field would take in the 1980s, which also manifests in the current wave of interest in the phenomenon.

With the blessing of the Unarius Academy, and film maker Jodie Wille, whose documentary about Unarius, Welcome Space Brothers, is produced by Elijah Wood’s Spectrevision, we’re thrilled to be screening a newly remastered edition of this joyful expression of cosmic optimism.

Following the screening, SAP’s Mark Pilkington, author of Mirage Men, will be in conversation with Tanner F. Boyle, author of the brilliant para-fortean blog – and forthcoming SAP title – Getting Spooked, visiting the UK from his native Pittsburgh, USA.
