We are deeply disappointed by the University of Nottingham’s decision to close its music department.
 
Last year, we wrote to the University’s Vice-Chancellor urging the institution to protect its music provision. Following the announcement, we are now writing to relevant Ministers to raise our concerns about the closure and the wider need to protect and strengthen music education at university level.
 
Our research shows that 96% of previous winners and nominees of The Ivors Classical Awards studied music at higher education level or equivalent. The pathway from education into professional practice matters.
 
At a time when the Government has identified the creative industries as a priority growth sector, we should be expanding access to creative education – not reducing it.
 
Music is not an optional extra. If we are serious about the future of the UK’s creative industries, we must protect the educational foundations on which their success is built.

We are saddened to hear of the death of George Fenton, Fellow of The Ivors Academy.
 
One of Britain’s most respected screen composers, George’s career spanned theatre, cinema, television and live performance.
 
His work included scores for David Attenborough series including Planet Earth, Frozen Planet and The Blue Planet, as well as films including Gandhi, Groundhog Day, Dangerous Liaisons, The Fisher King, You’ve Got Mail and I, Daniel Blake.
 
Across his career, George received multiple Ivor Novello Awards - The Best Film Theme or Song for For All Mankind (from Gandhi) in 1983, Best Theme from a TV or Radio Production for Jewel in the Crown in 1985, Best Theme from a Television/Radio Production for The Monocled Mutineer in 1987, Best Film Theme or Song for Cry Freedom in 1988, Best Commissioned Film Score for Shadowlands in 1995, Best Original Music for Television/Radio Broadcast for The Blue Planet in 2002.
 
He was made a Fellow of The Ivors Academy in 2007.
 
George also played an important role in supporting his fellow composers, founding the Association of Professional Composers, one of the organisations that later became part of The Ivors Academy.

We’re proud to announce that The Ivors Academy’s Senior Awards Manager, Cindy Truong, has been named in Billboard UK’s 40 Under 40.👏
 
Returning from maternity leave to help deliver the 71st Ivor Novello Awards, Cindy reflected on balancing motherhood with a demanding career and her pride in helping to grow the recognition and respect given to exceptional songwriting.
 
“Being a mum to young children while giving your best to a demanding job and major project is rarely easy, but I’m proud to have come through it and of what we achieved. At a time when AI is changing the conversation around music creation, celebrating the craft and creativity of songwriters and composers feels more important than ever.”
 
Cindy has just helped deliver a successful Ivors Academy Honours, recognising Stormzy, James Blake, MNEK, Annie Macmanus and more. Next, she’s playing a key role in The Ivors Composer Awards at Grosvenor House this November, part of our wider work to raise the profile of composers and composition through the first Ivors Composer Week and a dedicated Composer Summit.

CEO of Publishing at , Chris Meehan, was honoured for nearly two decades spent making music publishing more accessible, transparent and fair for songwriters. Through the businesses he helped build, Meehan has widened access to publishing and royalty collection, helping songwriters better understand their rights, realise the value of their work and build sustainable careers.

Victor Finn: the composition should get the lion’s share.
 
Victor Finn’s speech after being honoured at this year’s .
 
CEO of .music, Ireland’s music rights collecting society, Victor Finn, received an Honour for his longstanding support of Irish songwriters and composers. Since taking the helm in 2008, he has strengthened creators’ rights, revenues and representation, while growing IMRO to more than 30,000 members. 
 
Finn also played a key role in The Ivors Academy’s launch in Ireland, its first formal presence outside the UK in more than 80 years.

Dynamic duos from last Thursday’s .

Last week, we honoured seven incredible people whose work has made a difference to music and the people who create it.

Congratulations to Stormzy, James Blake, Emily Eavis, Annie Macmanus, MNEK, Chris Meehan and Victor Finn, who all received an Ivors Academy Honour.

Our 2026 recipients join an outstanding group of previous honourees, including The Ivors Academy President Elton John, RAYE, Kae Tempest,  Richard Branson, Jon Platt, Kanya King and Carla Marie Williams MBE.

The Ivors Academy Honours 2026 are supported by Believe Music Publishing, IMRO, MCPS, Meta, PPL, PRS for Music, SESAC Performing Rights, TikTok and YouTube Music.
