Congratulations to Mark Fuller from and Ibiza Hall Of Fame inductee Paul Oakenfold who were recently presented with a Global Club & Dance Hall Of Fame venue award recognising the hotel’s contribution to dance music and club culture.
This special award celebrates venues that have played an important role in the history and ongoing story of club culture and dance music and the Karma Sanctum Soho Hotel is a more than worthy recipient.

The Soho Business Alliance has submitted its formal response to Westminster City Council’s Draft Statement of Licensing Policy 2026.

We welcome much of the draft, including its recognition of the enormous economic and cultural contribution made by licensed venues, its focus on women’s safety and its aim to support well-managed businesses.

But we are concerned that parts of the policy do not yet match those ambitions.

Our main concerns are:

The West End Cumulative Impact Policy creates a strict presumption against new or varied licences for pubs, bars and music and dance venues—including the businesses that define Soho’s identity, LGBTQIA+ heritage and cultural life.

The proposed definition of a cultural venue is too narrow and risks excluding DJ-led, standing-audience and club-format venues.

The policy does not adequately recognise Soho as the nationally significant night-time and cultural district identified in London and Westminster planning policy.

Its complexity, duplication and uncertainty will place disproportionate legal and compliance costs on independent and family-run businesses.

And while operators are expected to carry an increasing burden for crime prevention and public safety, the policy must be matched by coordinated investment in policing, transport, cleansing and the public realm.

We share the Council’s goal: a Soho that is safe, well-managed, inclusive and a good neighbour.

Our response offers practical changes to help the final policy support residents while protecting the independent businesses and cultural venues that make Soho unique.

We look forward to discussing these proposals constructively with Westminster City Council.

🍽️ SOHO SUPPORTS A VAT CUT FOR HOSPITALITY 🍷

Soho’s restaurants, cafés, pubs, bars and venues are the beating heart of London’s cultural life — creating jobs, driving tourism and bringing communities together.

But hospitality businesses are under increasing pressure from rising costs and economic uncertainty. A VAT cut would provide vital support to help independent businesses survive, grow and continue making Soho one of the most vibrant places in the world.

We’re calling on Government to back hospitality and protect the future of our high streets, nightlife and cultural economy.

📍 Support jobs
📍 Support independent businesses
📍 Keep hospitality accessible
📍 Protect Soho’s unique culture

Now is the time to back hospitality.

At the Night Time Economy Summit 2026, Angela Rayner spoke about something everyone in this industry feels but rarely hears said out loud — hospitality is more than a job. It’s graft, pride, community and resilience.

Because for millions, this sector isn’t a stepping stone. It’s a career, a craft and a culture that keeps our towns and cities alive after dark.

“Hospitality is much bigger than the problems of the business ... it knits us all together”

Chef and businessman Tom Kerridge says the hospitality sector impacts jobs and work across the country, and calls on the government to cut business rates, as average rates on his four pubs have seen a “monstrous” 115% rise
