“Shards”

My vision loss has informed many of my paintings. “Shards” is based on the fragments of vision that I have left. The word “shard” can also describe a splinter of crystal, or gemstone or glass. Even with loss there is beauty. Even with loss, there is a way through.

Currently I’m pushing my low vision to see if I can still draw and paint realistically. It’s a challenge. A few things I’ve learned is that I’m struggling differentiating between colors. A pink and a brown pastel in the box essentially look the same until I take them out and lay the next to each other.

The other challenge is that the details are lost. I’ve been using my iPhone camera to enlarge the area that I am working on. I often work with my iPhone and my left hand and a pastel and my right. But have adaptation is key and I’m happy to still be able to draw and paint even with significant vision loss. The results from the first drawing are below. More to follow in the series.

It’s kind of funny, being visually impaired from glaucoma, that the only time I never really even think about my vision loss is when I’m sitting in front of a painting and creating. I’m not really sure why this is - maybe it’s because I’m a foot and a half away from the board or maybe it’s because I’m intent on pulling areas out of the painting that I want bring forward, and pushing other areas back.

I’m not really sure what the reason is. But I know that painting is where I feel whole.

This piece was Bmore. When things sit around in my studio too long, this is what happens. Letting it marinate for the time being.
