Human Rights Leader Magdaleno “Leno” Rose-Avila Passes at 80

Seattle, WA: Magdaleno “Leno” Rose-Avila died today at a hospital in Seattle after a weeks-long closing of a life well-lived in pursuit of love, justice and human rights for all people. He was loved by many and is survived by his wife Carolyn Rose-Avila, his son Kimbo Tenorio, his daughter, Aviva Rose-Avila, and a large extended family. Plans for several memorials in various cities will be announced at a later date.

Leno was a human rights activist, a published poet and writer, and spent his lifetime working to help others in need and to make our world a better place. In 1968, he participated in the protests at the University of Colorado around the death of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. The protests led to many changes on campus including the development of the first programs for minorities as well as co-ed dorms.

Leno served as Peace Corps country director in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Paraguay, and Micronesia. His past employment includes Amnesty International, USA, the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation, Witness to Innocence, Death Penalty Focus, the Department of Labor, the Colorado Migrant Council, the Democratic National Committee and numerous other positions with various organizations working for civil and human rights.
