As summer arrives, many Alaskans head to the backcountry to enjoy everything Alaska has to offer. This is a good reminder that, even when you are on a quick day hike, that one wrong step can turn into an emergency if you are not prepared. Always tell a trusted friend or family member where you are going and when you plan to be back, and bring a communication device that works when there is no cell service. It is always a good idea to pack for bad weather and bring extra food and water.
