At the request of the Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Air National Guardsmen of the 176th Wing rescued an injured hiker from steep terrain in the Hatcher Pass area, Aug. 18, 2026.
When the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center received the request for assistance, an HH-60W Jolly Green II aircrew assigned to the 210th Rescue Squadron was conducting
a training mission in the area with Guardian Angel personnel from the 212th RQS already aboard. The aircrew quickly transitioned from training to the rescue mission.
After locating the injured hiker, the Guardian Angels conducted hoist operations to extract the individual from the mountainside. The hiker was transported aboard the HH-60W to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer.

On 08/20/2026, at approximately 1217 hours, Fairbanks AWT received a report of an ATV rollover with possible serious injuries. Helo 2 responded with a Wildlife Trooper cross trained and licensed as an EMT2. Troopers and Helo 7 already in the area for the 40 Mile Caribou Hunt responded as well. The ATV rider was stabilized by Troopers, and then transported to FMH aboard Helo 2 with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

On 08/18/2026 Troopers received a distress signal from nearby the village of Bettles. Garmin had provided ongoing communication of a float plane crashing into the forest on its way back to Bettles. 3 Occupants were identified with one reporting injuries. State SAR coordinator, Fairbanks Dispatch, Fairbanks Rural, and RCC coordinated effort to retrieve the passengers. By 0100 08/19/2026 all passengers were recovered and transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

On August 23, 2026, at 0010, Male subject, age 39, of Nevada, fell overboard from a fishing vessel anchored in Saw Mill Bay, approximately 10 miles outside Valdez Harbor. The United States Coast Guard was activated and assumed search responsibilities at sea utilizing vessels and a helicopter. At approximately 1100 hrs the Coast Guard transferred the SAR to the Alaska Wildlife Troopers.
AWT requested the assistance of the Alaska Dive Search Rescue and Recovery Team who responded and at around 9:00 PM located and recovered the body in the ocean near where he had gone missing. Next of kin has been notified. The body is being transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing.

Alphonsus Peters, 69, of Nulato remains missing. As hunting season brings more people onto the river and into areas surrounding Nulato, we are asking hunters, boaters and others traveling downriver to please remain alert and keep an eye out for Alphonsus or anything that may help locate him.

Alphonsus was last known to be at his residence in Nulato on July 28. His clothing description and direction of travel are unknown.

Please take a moment to review and share the attached missing person flyer, particularly with anyone who may be traveling the river or spending time in remote areas.
