To Our Residents and Neighbors: A Cool, Safe Place This Summer β˜€οΈ

At SRHA, we know that summer heat isn't just uncomfortable β€” for older adults and neighbors on fixed incomes, especially those in homes without reliable air conditioning, it can be dangerous. Looking out for one another through the hottest months is part of what keeps our community strong.

That's why we want every resident to know about the Staunton Cooling Shelter, opening June 29 at Faith Lutheran Church. It's a free, welcoming place to get out of the heat β€” no appointment, no screening, just a cool and safe space to rest.

Inside you'll find air conditioning, cold bottled water, snacks, a first aid station, free Wi-Fi, and books to pass the time. If you, a family member, or a neighbor needs relief on a hot day, this space is for you.

Open June 29 through September πŸ•˜ Monday–Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. πŸ“ Faith Lutheran Church, Staunton

Can you give a few hours this summer? The shelter depends on volunteers, and shifts are still open. Volunteers must be 18 or older, and a training session will be held Monday, June 15 at 10 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church. To sign up or ask questions, email πŸ“§ [email protected]

Whether you come to cool off or step up to help, looking after our neighbors in the heat is something we can do together. πŸ’š

πŸ“š Big things are happening for our kids!

We are thrilled to celebrate the completion of our tutoring program β€” and we could not have done it without our outstanding partners at Staunton City Schools!

This program was all about giving our children the support, encouragement, and tools they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond. Watching them grow over these weeks has been an absolute joy.

A heartfelt thank you to Staunton City Schools for believing in our kids and showing up as true partners in this community. 🀝❀️

We are already looking forward to what comes next for these incredible young people!

🏠 BIG NEWS for SRHA and our community! πŸŽ‰

On May 7th, the Staunton Redevelopment and Housing Authority had the incredible honor of hosting senior leadership from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), including Assistant Secretary Benjamin Hobbs from the Office of Public and Indian Housing and Assistant Deputy Secretary Joseph DeFelice, along with the HUD Richmond Field Office team.

During the visit, SRHA was formally accepted into HUD's Work and Dignity Coalition β€” a national initiative committed to advancing work, opportunity, and self-sufficiency for assisted households. Assistant Secretary Hobbs and SRHA Executive Director Nehemias Velez signed the certificate of acceptance, marking a proud milestone for our agency and the Staunton community. βœοΈπŸ†

We were proud to be joined by Mayor Michelle Edwards, Brad Bryant of Habitat for Humanity of Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro, and Chris Lassiter of the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge β€” a true reflection of the strong partnerships that make this community great.

This is a proud moment for SRHA, our residents, and the entire Staunton community. We are energized and committed to building pathways to economic independence and self-sufficiency for the families we serve. πŸ’ͺ

Thank you to everyone who made this visit possible. The best is yet to come!
