At the end of 2025, Staunton resident Laurie Berman and founder of The Village-Allegheny Mountain Institute approached us with a bombshell of an offer. She decided to gift Jones Gardens the former Newtown Baking & Kitchen—fully equipped and with one wish: that it would continue serving our community through access to wholesome food.
We are honored to steward this incredible gift and transform it into ZÜKA Café & Grocery, a community food hub dedicated to fresh local food, farmer support, food education, and culinary workforce development.
Join us on September 21st for our Inaugural Farm-to-Table Chef Throwdown. This will be an unforgettable evening featuring talented local chefs, regional farms, and a multi-course culinary competition. Tickets can be purchased at jonesgarden.org. Every ticket helps build a stronger, healthier, and more equitable local food system right here in Staunton.
Come celebrate great food, local talent, and the future of ZÜKA Café & Grocery with us!

🍅 Meet Papa Jiggs.

This season, the tomato crops growing at Jones Gardens have been adopted by the Walton family in memory of Garry Walton’s father, whom they affectionately called “Papa Jiggs.”

Raised in South Boston, Virginia, Papa Jiggs always had a garden in his backyard. He was known for his Silver Queen corn, Big Boy and Better Boy tomatoes, butterbeans, and black-eyed peas. What made his garden special wasn’t just what he grew; it was what he shared. Friends, family and neighbors could always count on a bounty of fresh vegetables from his garden.

His family told us:

“We were delighted to give a crop to Jones Gardens for 2026. We truly believe in the wonderful work you are doing through this community garden.”

We’re honored that Papa Jiggs’ legacy of generosity and love of gardening will continue to grow through our garden and help nourish many more neighbors!

You can honor a loved one, celebrate a family tradition or support local food access by adopting a crop for the season.
