In 1995, Dolly Parton started mailing books to children in her home county to inspire children to love reading in honor of her dad, who couldn’t read or write.

That idea lives here too. Every month, 3,400 children in Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro find a book in the mailbox — because of neighbors who fund it, volunteers who run it, and a woman from Sevier County, TN who started it all.

Thank you, Dolly. We will always love you.

🎉 Congratulations to the 2026 Smyth Education Award recipients!

These ten Nelson County Public Schools employees were honored this past Friday, August 7th, at the NCPS Annual Convocation for their outstanding dedication to students and this school community.

This year's honorees: Donald Bell, John Dolan, Jennifer Durkee, Sarah Hitt, Harmony Holbrook, David Lane, Cora Marshall, Robert Meeks, Emily Schilling, and Waverly Ward.

The Smyth Education Award was established in 1998 by H. Gordon and Mary Beth Smyth to recognize NCPS employees each year for outstanding performance in fostering and improving student learning.

Thank you for everything you do for the students of Nelson County! 👏

We love our furry friends and remain grateful for the David Feline Medical Assistance Fund!

No cat should go without medical treatment because of the cost of veterinary services. Thanks to a generous grant from the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge and its David Feline Medical Assistance Fund, Anicira is able to provide financial assistance for household cats needing care in Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro. If you have a sick or injured cat living in your home and are facing financial barriers to care, we’re here to help.

Due to the current heat advisory, First Baptist Waynesboro, VA will be serving as a cooling station for the City of Waynesboro on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Anyone in need is welcome to stop by and cool off. Air conditioning, cold drinking water, and light snacks will be available. Please help spread the word to anyone who may benefit from this resource.
