Back in 2009 the SMG was started to foster cooperation and communication between musicians, venues, and music lovers to improve the music scene in Staunton. Over the past seven years, the Guild and many, many other groups, individuals and businesses have made that a reality.
Over time, and as the music community grew in numbers, strength, and cohesion we observed a gradual reduction in participation in Guild events and programs. On the one hand, that was a little discouraging. But, on the other hand, we take that as a sign that our community of artists, venues, and supporters is growing more and more vibrant, more independent, and more integrated into life of our city.
After seven years of successful programs and community outreach, the Staunton Music Guild is closing up shop. The Board would like to thank the original organizers, especially Karen Lawrence, for her vision, inspiration, and dedication to this community organization. We also would like to thank John Huggins for the indefatigable support, entrepreneurial spirit, and pure joy that he brings to our music community.
The Board would like to thank everyone that has participated in programs, fundraising, and events throughout the past seven years. Many new friendships and collaborations have been started through this group that continue to this day.
The Guild Board is working with local organizations to continue the Ray Houser Scholarship for local high school students committed to studying music or broadcasting.
In accordance with state law, the Guild Board will distribute any funds raised to support Guild programs over the years to local non-profit organizations.
The excellent Open Mic hosted by Board member Fritz Horisk at Queen City Brewing will continue. The Guild Board would like to especially thank Dom and Teresa for their generous support for this event.
The page will remain up and active as a place for community members to share ideas, gigs, and information.
The Google email group and stauntonmusicguild.org will be shut down.
It is always somewhat sad when an endeavor or enterprise reaches its natural conclusion, even when it has been a success, but mostly what we feel is a sense of accomplishment and we are proud to have been involved in the building of our great artistic community.
Thank you musicians and music lovers of Staunton and Augusta County for the opportunity to work along side you!
We'll all see each other at the gigs!
Jason Clarke
President, Staunton Music Guild
