The Shenandoah LGBTQ Center is closed today in observance of Juneteenth. Also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, Juneteenth marks a day in 1865 when enslaved Texans learned they would be free, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Slavery didn't end everywhere in the U.S. on this date — it remained legal in border states exempted from the Proclamation until the 13th Amendment was ratified in December 1865.

Please join us tomorrow, June 20th, at the 10th Annual Juneteenth Celebration! We will be tabling, starting at 11 am, at Montgomery Hall Park. Staff put together a reading list and will be bringing books from both our Q***r Resource Library and our own personal libraries for folks to see in person. Come by and say hello!
