We are so excited to partner with and for this reading and author talk!

Join author Jeffrey Dale Lofton for a conversation with Nat Slater about his book Red Clay Suzie, the coming-of-age story of Philbet, gay and living with a disability, battling bullying, ignorance, and disdain as he makes his way in life as an outsider in the Deep South—before finding acceptance in unlikely places.

This event, co-hosted by the Virginia Center for the Book and The Off Center, is free and open to the public and will be followed by book sales and a signing.

Thank you to everyone who came out to join us in accepting the City of Staunton Pride Month Proclamation! This proclamation celebrates our local LGBTQ+ community, the work of the Shenandoah LGBTQ Center, and honors June as Pride Month.

At a time when our civil rights are under significant threat — when hostile policies and institutional changes are pushing many into the shadows — it feels more important than ever to be in community to accept this recognition. This acknowledgement of the many ways our LGBTQ community contributes meaningfully to life in Staunton matters. We urge everyone to carry this forward in action to continue to make this city more just and more welcoming for all.

We’re honored to be a beneficiary of Elton John Impact Awards – celebrating the changemakers who are redefining culture and uplifting the LGBTQ+ community. 🌈

This program goes beyond celebration, providing critical funding and visibility to organizations like ours, helping expand life-affirming programs and reach more people who need support. Because of this support and visibility from The Elton John Impact Awards, and , we are able to continue providing access to healthcare, housing services for LGBTQ youth, and host events for social and community connections!

This year’s honorees – including Jonathan Bailey, Laverne Cox, Melissa Etheridge, Billie Jean King, Orville Peck and Chappell Roan – have driven change, shaped culture and made a positive impact on society.

Since 2021, the City of Staunton has honored June as Pride Month with a Proclamation celebrating our LGBTQ+ community and the work of the Shenandoah LGBTQ Center.

This year, the Center will accept the Proclamation at the May 28th City Council Meeting. The meeting is open to the public and begins at 7 PM. The Proclamation is presented early in the meeting.

Let's fill the room! Please attend and show your appreciation to City Council and the City of Staunton for their commitment and support. At a time when our civil rights are under significant threat — when hostile policies and institutional changes are pushing many into the shadows — we must remain committed to showing up. Help us reflect the beauty of all who call Staunton home, and demonstrate why actionable allyship and support are more important than ever.
