Staunton Tree Stewards was founded from the successful completion of Shenandoah Green's Staunton Legacy Tree Project, which led many in the Staunton community to plant over 2,746 trees during the pandemic - at least one for each child in our public school system. With a generous grant from the Proteus Foundation, we then pivoted to a more sustainable tree steward program. Our mission is to take ca
re of the trees we planted, plus help maintain additional significant trees at local schools and other public spaces, as well as support our City Arborist in caring for the remainder of the "gentle giants" - 1,500 trees planted by local citizens in our two local city parks on the occasion of Staunton's first Arbor Day in 1889. We are using PlanIT Geo's TreePlotter software to geolocate, inventory and document the current status and ongoing maintenance of as many trees as we can, and we need additional tech-savvy, environmentally oriented folks to help us finish all of the geolocations and assessments. We also need volunteers to help us water, mulch, and generally care for as many public trees around Staunton as possible. And we are also open to folks "adopting" specific trees, for which they could provide a more total care approach while supporting us. We've also begun more strategic tree plantings around Staunton, with a focus on mitigating storm-water runoff, reducing heat islands, and environmental justice projects, and we need folks to help us identify and accomplish more of these tree planting projects. Our goals also include advocating for more native plantings, removal of invasive tree species like Bradford/Callery Pear and Autumn Olive, and control of harmful invasive insects like Emerald Ash Borer and the Spotted Lantern Fly. Staunton Tree Stewards is a proud member of Trees Virginia (www.treesvirginia.org), Virginia's Urban Forest Council. Staunton Tree Stewards is an ongoing program of Shenandoah Green (www.shenandoahgreen.org), a 501c3 environmental organization, registered in Virginia.
