Under Virginia law, drivers traveling in *both directions* must completely stop at least 20 feet away from a school bus when its flashing red lights are active and stop-arm is extended.
You must remain stopped until the bus moves or the red lights turn off.
To look up official rules or safety programs, consult the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

When You Must Stop: All lanes and directions; On two-lane, three-lane, or multi-lane unseparated roads, traffic approaching from any direction must stop.

Loading and unloading: Drivers must stop whenever the bus is actively loading or unloading passengers.

We recently had our first Emergency Vehicle Operator course of 2026, certifying nine new drivers and renewing certifications for several more. Congratulations to everyone who completed the course!

If you are interested in emergency services but don't know where to start, we take people with zero experience and provide the trainings and mentorship needed for you to start strong as a volunteer first responder for our community. EVOC classes like this one are just a sample of the opportunities we offer for our volunteers. If you are interested in joining, you can find applications on our website at www.swoopefire.com, or stop by our station to pick up one.

Everyone at SVFC is very proud of these members who successfully completed their EMT training. Their graduation from Frontline Focus's first EMT Academy, along with nine other rising EMTs, was completed last night.

Well done! We look forward to having them respond to all of our EMS calls and serving the community with their new skills.

🚒🎉 BIG NEWS from the Swoope Volunteer Fire Company! 🎉🚒

We are absolutely THRILLED to share that our brand new paved parking lot and concrete entryway/exit are COMPLETE — and we couldn’t be more excited! Just look at that beautiful pavement! 😍

This incredible project would not have been possible without the generous support of the Augusta County Board of Supervisors and a very special thank you to former Pastures District Supervisor Pam Carter and former Beverley Manor District Supervisor Butch Wells, whose dedication and commitment to our community made this dream a reality. We are beyond grateful! 🙏

Staunton Fire & Rescue responded to a late-night structure fire at 10:20pm at a single-family residence located at 661 Gloria Place.
Engine-1 arrived on scene to find a single-story residence with fire visible from the rear of the home. Crews quickly initiated an aggressive fire attack while simultaneously conducting a search of the residence for occupants. It was later confirmed that the home was vacant at the time of the incident.
The fire was brought under control at approximately 10:42 PM. Firefighters remained on the scene until about 12:34 AM, performing salvage and overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. Augusta County Fire-Rescue Station-10 assisted in the firefighting efforts as Swoope Volunteer Fire Company and Verona Volunteer Fire Company filled quarters at both city fire stations.
