The future of fishing is here and this is what it looks like.

Ubuntu is a cultural understanding that comes from the South African Bantu language group. It is a collection of values and practices that we are a part of a larger and more significant communal, environmental, and spiritual world. It is a philosophy that values collectivism over individualism as in —”I am because we are”.

Episode #23, Ubuntu Fly Anglers On the Real Podcast with Miriam Jorns Miriam Jorns.

In this special Hispanic Heritage Month episode of On The Reel and Be What You Don’t See, Bob Bartlett of the Ubuntu Fly Anglers Network sits down with South Carolina fly angler Miriam Jorns to talk about heritage, representation, community, and finding belonging on the water. Miriam shares how fishing with her father as a child grew into a passion for fly fishing and eventually a commitment to helping others—especially young Hispanic anglers—see themselves represented in outdoor spaces.

From learning to embrace her identity and “be loud” to discovering the power of mentorship and community, Miriam reflects on what it means to carve out space in a sport where she didn’t always see people who looked like her. Her message is simple but powerful: don’t wait until you feel like you belong to show up. By showing up, getting uncomfortable, and creating opportunities for others, we can help build a fly-fishing community where more people can truly say, “I fish. I belong.”
