Come chat with us about trees!

Join us one week from today for my first District 1 Town Hall! We’re going to be focusing on our District 1 parks, increasing our District 1 tree coverage, and everything else relating to the great District 1. It’s not just us, Council Member Cathcart and I will be joined by representatives from Spokane Parks & Recreation and The Lands Council to help answer your questions🌳🌲🌱

The first hour of the program will be community tabling with neighborhood councils and other city programs while the second hour will have a brief presentation followed by a question and answer portion. If you can’t join us at the NE community center next week don’t worry, city cable 5 will also be there and have a recording to review later!

Finding Resilience in Nature During Crisis

We're living through a lot right now. Unprecedented natural disasters like Spokane’s firestorms are belied by ongoing drought and pressures to our water cycles. Even during “normal times” there is a background sense of overwhelm, disconnection, and that the old ways of doing things aren't working anymore. This talk is an invitation to pause and ask: how do we stay steady, hopeful, and connected to each other and to the earth, even in difficult times?

Lighthouse Spokane, in connection with Clear Sky Center, INUUC and UUCS welcomes Catherine Pawasarat Sensei, the Spiritual Director of Clear Sky, for a public talk exploring psychological and emotional resilience in the face of today's overlapping crises. Catherine teaches in an authentic Buddhist lineage that informs her approach, resonant regardless of spiritual tradition. This is a grounded, accessible conversation about why so many people feel overwhelmed and disconnected, and what genuine, embodied responses look like. Sensei speaks from decades of experience building Clear Sky as a living response to these challenges, and the talk offers a natural entry point for those wanting to explore further through Clear Sky's programs and retreats.

Catherine Pawasarat Sensei (https://www.clearskycenter.org/founding-teachers/) will share simple, practical ways that our relationship with nature and with each other can restore a sense of resilience and possibility.

This talk is for anyone feeling the weight of the world and wondering what a different way of living might look like going forward. No prior experience with meditation or spirituality is needed, just an open mind and a willingness to imagine something new.

The event will take place outside in the Upper Terrace gardens at Haystack Heights. The site is wheelchair accessible up a path with assistance. Given inclimate weather, talk will be indoors in the Common House. Please do not disturb the residents at 907 E. 8th Ave.

This Saturday, participate in World Cleanup Day by helping clean up the Spokane River! Join us at our member social on Sept. 24 to share a drink with friends and find out about The Lands Council's work and how to get involved. Then help plant trees at our fall planting events!

There’s no better way to spend World Cleanup Day than volunteering for a clean river! On September 19, join Spokane Riverkeeper, Spokane River Forum, The Lands Council, and river stewards from across our community for a large-scale cleanup of the Spokane River corridor.

With various locations to choose from, there’s a place for everyone to pitch in. Bring your friends, family, coworkers, or come on your own. We’ll provide the cleanup supplies. You bring yourself and a willingness to get a little dirty for the river.

Let’s show up for the Spokane River, together.
