🗳️ Ballots are here!! VOTE EARLY!

Democracy takes more than a vote — it takes organized people, collective action, and solidarity with the communities most impacted by authoritarian power. Voting early is one way we protect our democracy and build momentum for what comes next.

PJALS urges Washington voters to vote NO on three right-wing statewide ballot initiatives:

❌ No on I-645: Protect funding for education and healthcare. Repealing the Millionaires Tax would eliminate more than $13 billion in funding and benefit the wealthiest 1%.

❌ No on I-001: Protect LGBTQ+ youth and survivors of child abuse. This initiative threatens student safety, privacy, and mental health.

❌ No on I-638: Protect girls from invasive ge***al examinations required to participate in school sports.

📣 Ready to take action? Make a plan to return your ballot early, help others vote, and join us for a community canvass to get out the vote!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for PJALS’ 11th Annual Benefit Dinner: People Power: Shaping Our Future Together! ❤️✊🏽

From Pui-Yan Lam’s heartwarming and motivating keynote to our entertaining YALP hosts, our inspiring community partners and youth organizer, Wyk, and the delicious food shared around the room, the evening reminded us of what’s possible when we come together.

Michaela delivered a powerful, moving speech calling on our community to continue showing up and investing in PJALS’ work for a just and nonviolent world. Together, we’re building the people power it takes to create the future we deserve. 💪🏽

To everyone who attended, spoke, volunteered, donated, and helped make this evening special: thank you for being part of this movement. Our work continues because of you!

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we reflect on how we and our families came to live on Indigenous lands, confront the ongoing realities of settler colonialism, and consider our responsibilities to Indigenous sovereignty, liberation, and self-determination.

This day calls us not only to reflect, but to learn, listen, and take action in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and communities.

📅 PJALS offices will be closed Monday, October 12 in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. We’ll return to regular office hours Tuesday, October 13.

📣 Meet our 2026 Benefit keynote speaker: Pui-Yan Lam!

Pui-Yan Lam is an immigrant from Hong Kong who has called Spokane home for more than 20 years. She is a professor of sociology at Eastern Washington University and has been deeply involved in community organizing and movement work throughout the Spokane region.

Pui-Yan has served with organizations including Spokane Community Against Racism, Asians for Collective Liberation, Greater Spokane Progress, and Refugee and Immigrant Connections of Spokane. She also serves on the executive board of the Spokane Regional Labor Council.

Join us as Pui-Yan shares the keynote at PJALS’ 11th Annual Benefit Dinner, “People Power: Shaping Our Future Together.” We’re looking forward to gathering with our community and hearing from someone who has spent decades building toward a more just Spokane. ✊🏽

✊🏽 Help build Spokane’s community readiness!

Join PJALS and Washington Neighborhood Defense (WAND) for an anti-ICE workplace rights training + canvass on Saturday, October 10.

🕚 Training: 11 AM–1 PM

📣 Canvass: 1–3 PM

📍 Location shared upon registration

In this interactive training, you’ll learn how to share basic Fourth Amendment rights information with local workplaces, distribute Know Your Rights materials and rapid response tools, and practice conversations with workers, managers, and business owners.

You’ll also learn how to talk with friendly workplaces about broader collective action strategies, including the role a general strike can play in resisting authoritarian policies and protecting our communities.

Then we’ll put the training into practice! We’ll head out in pairs for a workplace canvass across Spokane County, helping more workplaces understand their rights and connect with community resources.

Already attended a WAND training? Join us again to learn the updated curriculum and get more practice canvassing!

Talk About It Tuesday: No Hate in WA State

What’s on the ballot this November, and what could it mean for Washington students?

Join us Tuesday, September 29 for a conversation with Julie Sparkman, Spokane Campaign Representative for No Hate in WA State, about two statewide ballot measures: I-001 and I-638.

We’ll learn more about the measures, hear why the No Hate in WA State campaign is organizing in opposition to them, and talk about what is still needed in the weeks leading up to Election Day.

Introducing BRCS 🧱

✊🏾 Build your race-class analysis. Build your organizing skills. Build people power.

Understanding how race and class shape life in the U.S. is essential to meeting this moment. In this five-part workshop and canvass series, we’ll deepen our race-class analysis, reflect on our own identities and experiences, learn the fundamentals of effective canvassing, and practice having meaningful conversations across differences.

Led using curriculum from EWU Professor of Sociology Pui-Yan Lam, BRCS will combine two full-day workshops with three community canvasses where participants put their skills into practice.

📚 BRCS Part 1: Saturday, Sept. 12 | 9 AM–5 PM

📚 BRCS Part 2: Saturday, Sept. 19 | 9 AM–5 PM

📣 Canvass #1: Saturday, Oct. 3 | 1–5 PM

📣 Canvass #2: Thursday, Oct. 15 | 5:30–7:30 PM

📣 Canvass #3: Saturday, Oct. 24 | 1–5 PM

Doors open 30 minutes before each event. Location will be shared after registration.

After completing the workshops, participants will join our first BRCS cohort and put their skills into action through canvassing.

If you’re ready to deepen your commitment to resisting fascism, building solidarity across race and class, and creating a just and nonviolent world, BRCS is for you.

🎟️ Sliding-scale registration is available, including a scholarship rate for anyone for whom cost would be a barrier.
