Shoutout to our friends at The Haywood Burns Institute for letting us share this hot off the press.

BI ran the feasibility study in LA back in 2020 that led to the creation of a Department of Youth Development which transformed the way the county cared for its youth - towards a Care First, Jails Last approach.

San Diego is being called to follow suit. We need the community to show up 9AM at the county building and share why this is so important for us.

The budget works for us. We are the community that fund it!

“Cold and nothing but pain.”

Our Youth Justice Momentum Team member and Homegirlz del Corazón youth describes her experience inside San Diego’s Juvenile Hall.

We stand with Shimmy and all youth who have endured similar treatment.

Incarceration is harmful and traumatizing. It’s currently being funded at $131 million by San Diego county.

We can’t imagine a world where young people and their experiences are not centered.

The Youth Justice Momentum Team is a place for all youth to come, engage and lead conversations that have everything to do with them.

Thank you to Cafeina Cafe for hosting us. Your coffee shop makes our community safer.

Thank you to Maria Elena Greeman from Homegirlz del Corazón for being such an incredible partner and member of our team. None of today was possible without you!

And to our incredible youth and lived experienced panelists, YOU ARE OUR WHY. Thank you for leading us into safer and healthier communities. Your love for humanity paves the way for all of us to follow.

San Diego County Juvenile Probation Department has been mandated to report data for the next two years regarding their institutions, staff and procedures.

Use of force continues being high even with ongoing state investigations, the Juvenile Probation Department continues to be incapable of meeting the needs of our youth.

The data doesn’t lie and the conclusions are obvious: we urgently need a new approach.
