🏠 Can shared housing put a dent in homelessness?

Not solve it. Not end it overnight.

But what if we could create more housing opportunities today by better utilizing the homes and spaces that already exist?

At GLM House Inc. and PAR Excellanze Housing, we're exploring a simple but powerful idea: safe housing + supportive services + community = stability.

Shared housing isn't just about providing a bed. It's about creating a pathway forward—one that connects people to housing, employment, resources, and hope. The question isn't whether we can afford to try innovative housing solutions. The question is: Can we afford not to?

Join us June 22nd from 10am to noon in touring our North County PAR Excellanze Transitional House. Scan the QR to RSVP.

One of the biggest misunderstandings about shared housing is that people often see it as “less than,” when in reality, it can be one of the smartest transitional steps a person takes toward long-term housing stability.

The truth is: rental history matters.
Your rental history functions much like a professional resume. When a landlord reviews an application, they are often asking:

Can this person consistently pay rent?

Can they live peacefully with others?

Do they respect property?

Are they stable and reliable?

Can someone verify their housing behavior?

When there are large gaps in rental history, frequent evictions, unverified living arrangements, or periods where a person “stayed with friends or family,” it can become difficult to compete in today’s rental market especially in California, where rents are high and landlords often have multiple applicants.

Shared housing and communal living can serve as a bridge, not a setback.

Living in a shared housing environment allows individuals to:

Continue building verifiable rental history

Demonstrate consistent monthly payment habits

Establish positive landlord references

Rebuild trust after hardship, homelessness, incarceration, divorce, or financial instability

Strengthen routines and housing stability

Show future landlords they can successfully maintain housing

The goal is not to remain in shared housing forever. The goal is to position yourself to qualify for the housing of your choosing later.

A positive rental history tells future landlords:

“This person showed up. Paid consistently. Demonstrate being a good neighbor. Maintained their living environment. And respected the community they lived in.”

That reputation becomes valuable.

Sometimes the strongest move is not rushing into an apartment you cannot sustain but taking a strategic step that protects your housing future while rebuilding stability, income, and credibility.
