Sepsis Alliance is saddened by the passing of NASCAR champion Kyle Busch following severe pneumonia and sepsis. We extend our condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and fans.

His passing is a heartbreaking reminder that sepsis can happen to anyone and can progress quickly from an infection like pneumonia.

Know the signs: temperature change, infection, mental decline, and extreme illness/shortness of breath.

Early recognition saves lives. Learn more at Sepsis.org.

Ernie's sister, Marsha, continues to honor her brother's memory after he lost his life to sepsis.

Ernie developed sepsis from an undiagnosed case of pneumonia. His condition worsened quickly, and he wasn't able to receive care in time.

In his honor, Marsha hopes to raise awareness in her community and inspire stronger sepsis prevention and training in healthcare settings across California.

To better understand sepsis experiences and post-sepsis journeys, we're asking Sepsis Survivors to take a survey. Your responses will help shape future research, education programs, and policy initiatives designed to support survivors and families impacted by sepsis.

Survey results will be shared anonymously in aggregate at the Unite for Sepsis Symposium this June, as well as through Sepsis Alliance news and social channels.

⏰ Take the survey by May 31: https://sepsisalliance.jotform.com/260506600728049

Linda aspirated in her sleep and developed double pneumonia and septic shock within hours. She was admitted to the ICU, placed on high oxygen support, and treated with vasopressors.

After eight days in the hospital, she finally went home on supplemental oxygen.

Her story is a reminder of how quickly sepsis can strike and why awareness matters.

Kristal spent months in the hospital fighting for her life as sepsis caused organ failure, severe complications, and multiple major surgeries.

She worked through overwhelming pain, intensive rehabilitation, and the loss of her mobility and her nursing career, yet she refused to give up. Even after a second battle with sepsis in 2025 that required another extensive surgery, she continues to fight every day.

Kristal’s strength, resilience, and determination push her forward.

Recently, advocates, survivors, and families impacted by sepsis stood before the New Jersey Assembly Health Committee to push for change. The Committee voted to move S2884 forward unanimously.

During her testimony, Lucia, a sepsis survivor, shared:

“We need protocols for hospitals so that all sepsis patients are treated equally and more of us can make it… Sepsis is survivable, but the status quo must change so that sepsis deaths can decrease.”

Their voices are a powerful reminder that early recognition, standardized protocols, education, and accountability save lives. No patient’s outcome should depend on their zip code or who happens to be on duty.

Sepsis can escalate rapidly, and early recognition can be life-saving.

Megan is a nurse who spent years treating sepsis. Yet within hours of developing a stomachache, she became a patient herself. She fought for her life as the condition escalated from subtle symptoms to a medical emergency.

Her experience is a powerful reminder that sepsis can affect anyone, even those who know it best!
