Alum Carolina Barraza ('04) and Fellow Carlos ('28) were recently featured in the news for their involvement with Ocean Discovery Institute (ODI)!

Carolina, a former ODI student who now leads the organization’s Ocean Leader Program, is helping create hands-on learning opportunities in science for students in her community. Carlos is one of the Hoover High School students participating in the program, recently spending two weeks at the University of San Diego conducting college-level lab work and researching microplastic pollution at local beaches.

Through the program, Carlos and his peers collected and tested sand from Mission Beach and Tourmaline Beach, gaining firsthand experience with scientific research and learning more about the impact of microplastics on our coastline.

It’s great to see Fellows past and present connecting through opportunities that encourage the next generation of science leaders!

At the County of San Diego Operations Center, Class of 2028 Fellows learned how county government serves local communities, including how services are funded, how residents can get involved, and the range of careers available.

They also ran into Fellows alum Jonathan Vazquez ('15), now working in the County’s Public Services Department, offering an inspiring example of where their Fellows journey can lead.

This is how you use the Aaron Price Fellows network! Fellow Noah ('27) learned about Salk’s summer internship through a class visit. When he applied and landed an interview, Fellows staff connected him with alum Andi Tran ('19), who helped him prepare.

Noah earned the internship, and his work was later featured on NBC 7 San Diego.

To kick off their new journey, Class of 2029 recently spent five days in Julian for Orientation Camp. 🌄

Through team-building, camp activities, and thoughtful conversations around race, identity, and socioeconomic status, Fellows reflected on their experiences, challenged assumptions, and learned from one another. By the end of the week, they left as a class with a deeper understanding of themselves and others.

Class of 2027 Fellows Yasmeen, Molly, Ashley, and Niko recently completed U.S. Congresswoman Sara Jacobs' (D-CA-51) District Youth Vision Labs Program!

Fellows explored the complex issue of gun violence by examining its root causes, discussing school safety, and sharing their perspectives with local leaders. The experience provided a meaningful opportunity to strengthen their civic engagement skills while contributing thoughtful ideas on an issue that directly impacts young people and communities across the region.

Congratulations to Yasmeen, Molly, Ashley, and Niko on completing the program, and thank you to Congresswoman Sara Jacobs and her team for creating this opportunity for youth voices to be heard.

This summer, Class of 2028 visited on Catalina Island for their second-year summer trip in the program!

This trip was all about stepping outside of comfort zones, exploring new ideas, and building connections. From hands-on science experiences to conversations about protecting our environment, every moment encouraged Fellows to learn, grow, and see the world from a new perspective. 🧪🌎

Outside the classroom, Fellows kayaked, snorkeled, hiked to Wrigley Peak, and made memories together while experiencing the beauty of Catalina Island. What do you remember most about your Catalina experience?

Oldies but goodies! Thank you to the San Diego History Center Archives for these incredible glimpses into the past. ✨

Class of 2027 Fellows explored The Old Globe Theatre through the eyes of 1930s visitors—same landmark, totally different moment in time.

Did you catch the cameo from one of Balboa Park’s heroes, Kate Sessions? While so much has changed over the last 95 years, one thing hasn’t: The Old Globe remains a place where our community comes together—sharing laughter, building empathy, and finding understanding.
