SGAP Leaders Hispanic Heritage Month: Youth in STEM spotlight!

Meet Angela Olazaran Laureano, an innovator from Veracruz! Angela is using AI to make healthcare more accessible. By developing Ixtlilton, a prize-wining AI-powered virtual medical assistance that, when downloaded, works without internet access, she is helping people in remote communities determine when to seek medical care.

Angela is also leading STEM education, speaking at the Mexican Senate of the Republic about the importance of including STEM careers in the Mexican curriculum.

We are proud to highlight AERI, our fiscally sponsored nonprofit, and their event on Sunday, September 20th, from 1-3 pm that brought community members together around an environmental engineering workshop!

AERI executed a workshop called "Become a Plant Doctor" to kids ranging in age from 4-11, where they learnt about soil moisture detection with a sensor, as well as the science behind it. 8 cups with soil were set across a table where kids selected their "patient" to work with. Then, they answered a set of 3 questions: Does the soil look dry or wet? Did the sensor light flash? Does the soil need more water? Once a kid selected their soil-filled cup, a moisture sensor probe went into the soil, and 2 red LED lights would flash on if the soil was wet, and only 1 if it was dry.

Overall, AERI reached 33 attendees, with 3 student volunteers guiding the kid scientists!

Meet Ethan, a Leadership Series Alum!

As a middle schooler, Ethan was involved in the Leadership Series. In 2024, he graduated from Bates College, majoring in political science and minoring in anthropology. Currently, Ethan is the Staff Assistant at the US-Taiwan Business Council.

"[The Leadership Series] was an opportunity for me to work with other students in a more professional manner. It was kind of jump-starting my business career and [I learned] how to interact with other people around my age. It was a great opportunity for me to learn more about what I wanted to do with my life." - Ethan Huang
