“Representation matters” is more than a phrase: it’s a call to action. 💬

In our latest blog, CSD students from across the country share what it’s like to navigate the field as minority students, the challenges they’ve faced, the communities that have supported them, and why their identities strengthen the future of the profession.

Hear from:
✨ Solange Dzeketey, University of Oregon
✨ Daniela Cesena, San Diego State University
✨ Monica Gutierrez, University of Virginia
✨ Aneesha Sandhu, California State University, Sacramento

Their message is clear: breaking the silence starts with listening, but it must continue with action.

Advocacy isn’t just for seasoned professionals. Across the country, state associations are helping students build confidence, connect with mentors, and engage directly in the legislative process. From advocacy days to hands-on training programs, students are learning that their voices matter right now.

Join us in congratulating the 2025–2026 National NSSLHA Chapter of the Year: The University of Utah 🎉

With 200 volunteer hours, 50 advocacy messages sent to legislators, and record-breaking engagement across the chapter, the University of Utah’s NSSLHA chapter made an incredible impact this year through leadership, advocacy, service, and connection.

🌟 Members advocated for the future of the professions by organizing efforts at the Utah Senate Building and partnering with the Utah Speech-Language-Hearing Association to protect SLP and audiology licensure.

🌟 The chapter expanded its impact beyond campus through a service trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, where students worked alongside local educational and medical agencies supporting native Oaxacan and Indigenous communities. Members also participated in more than 20 local service events supporting food pantries, animal shelters, clinics, and more.

🌟 The chapter prioritized inclusion and belonging through its first-ever Diversity Night, featuring conversations on neurodiversity, immigration, LGBTQ+ rights, and bilingualism in CSD. Faculty meet-and-greets, mentorship programs, yoga and cocoa nights, and career development events also helped strengthen connection across the chapter.

The chapter demonstrated remarkable creativity and resilience through fundraising initiatives, custom merchandise sales, and advocacy efforts that secured a milestone funding award from student government. We’re proud to celebrate their incredible achievements and lasting impact!
