36 years ago today, the Americans with Disabilities Act became law. It reshaped a lot of things, workplaces, transportation, public buildings, but health care access is still one of the places it matters most.

Patients with disabilities often run into barriers that have nothing to do with their actual health, exam equipment that doesn't accommodate them, or assumptions that shape what treatment gets offered in the first place. Small, fixable things that add up to real gaps in care.

It's worth a quick gut check today: is your practice actually accessible, front door to exam room, for every patient who might walk through it?

Meet Dr. Sheri Hamersley, MCMS's President-Elect for this year.

Dr. Hamersley specializes in maternal and fetal medicine, caring for patients through some of the most complex and highest-stakes pregnancies in the region. Alongside that work, she's spending this year as President-Elect, learning the ropes of MCMS leadership before she officially takes over as President.

That year of overlap is intentional. It means whoever leads MCMS next has already sat in on the decisions, the relationships, and the ongoing priorities, instead of starting from scratch.

Physicians who take on roles like this are giving up time they don't really have to spare, on top of an already demanding specialty. We think that's worth recognizing.

Ever vented about a policy or insurance headache and thought someone should really do something about this? At MedChi, someone can, and it might be you.

The House of Delegates is where physician frustrations turn into actual legislative priorities. Any active MCMS or MedChi member can serve as a delegate or alternate delegate, and it meets just twice a year, April and September.

It's one of the more direct ways a Montgomery County physician can shape what happens in Annapolis. No lobbying experience required, just a willingness to show up and say what's actually happening in your practice.

Mark your calendars, Montgomery County physicians: MCMS's Fall Membership Meeting and Advocacy Leadership Lecture is happening Wednesday, October 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bethesda Marriott.

This is our big one, the night the whole MCMS membership gets together under one roof. Expect an update on where the Society stands, a lecture on advocacy leadership, and a room full of colleagues you don't get to see nearly enough during a normal work week.

It's months out, we know. But the good nights on the calendar are worth protecting early, before the fall schedule fills in around them.

Dr. Teater helped write the CDC's opioid prescribing guidelines back in 2016 and has spent years working on opioid safety at a national level. His course walks through how physicians can treat pain effectively without sacrificing safety, a balance a lot of us think about daily.

Tonight's the night! MCMS Ambassadors are heading to The Lawn at Strathmore for an evening of music, starting at 7:30 PM.

The bluegrass trio Damn Tall Buildings is playing, refreshments are available for purchase, and everyone is welcome to bring family and friends along. No agenda, no name tags required, just a relaxed evening outdoors with your MCMS community.

Tomorrow is World Brain Day, a day the World Federation of Neurology set aside to talk about something that affects nearly every family eventually: brain health.

This year's focus is on access. Stroke, dementia, migraine, epilepsy, these conditions don't check anyone's income before showing up, but the care available to treat them isn't distributed evenly at all.

Physicians here in Montgomery County are often the ones who notice the first sign, a patient mentioning memory lapses, a change in mood or coordination, before anyone else does. Getting that patient to the right specialist quickly can change the entire course of their care.

Quick introduction to someone many of you already know but might not know her full story.

Dr. Kisha Davis is a family medicine physician here in Montgomery County: she is the County's Chief Health Officer, the President-Elect of the American Academy of Family Physicians AND she serves on the MCMS Executive Board.

We like highlighting people like Dr. Davis because it says something about how MCMS works. Physicians here aren't just members of an organization, they're the ones showing up in County government, in hospital committees, in state advocacy, making sure decisions about health care in this community are made by people who actually practice it.

Summer in Montgomery County means long evenings, and MCMS wants our physician members to enjoy a few of them. On July 22, join fellow MCMS physicians for Music on the Lawn at Strathmore, an evening with the bluegrass trio Damn Tall Buildings under the stars at The Lawn at Strathmore in North Bethesda.

This one is intentionally low-key. No agenda, no slides, just a chance to bring your family, grab a blanket, and spend an evening with colleagues who understand what your week has looked like. Refreshments are available for purchase on site.

Medicine asks a lot of the people who practice it here. Evenings like this are part of how MCMS tries to give a little back, by creating space for physicians to build the kind of relationships that make Montgomery County's medical community feel like a community and not just a professional network.
