The YWCA of Greater Portland is the local affiliate of one of the oldest and largest women’s organizations in the nation. We have been an active part of the Portland community for the past 110 years, providing services to women, children, and families, from all walks of life—regardless of their age, race, or income level. With heavy hearts, we are announcing the closure of our Social Justice Program (SJP) on June 30th. Thank you to Shay, our Social Justice Education and Training Program Manager, and the incredible facilitators who brought this program to life. The impact you have had over the past 12 years of educating our community is immeasurable.

We’re grateful for every individual and organization who participated in our Social Justice workshops. Though SJP is closing its doors, we look forward to continuing the work of advancing social justice alongside you in our community and beyond.

Did you know that YWCA changed its name in 2015? Yep! While YWCA once stood for the "Young Women's Christian Association," we dropped that meaning in 2015 nationwide. This change allows us to better reflect and welcome the communities we serve.

Empowering women, eliminating racism, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all isn't about any one religion (or any religion at all)! Instead, we're guided by the belief that a better, more just world is possible - and that we all have a part to play in making that better world a reality.

On Saturday, our team led a workshop on self-empowerment and boundary setting at In Her Element. Hosted by Sabin CDC, this weekend of workshops brought together Portland women for activities and conversations on creativity, advocacy, and community building.

Sabin CDC promotes social equity through affordable housing for African American and Afro-Indigenous households adversely affected by gentrification, systemic oppression, and inequalities in Portland.

We had a great time tabling at SMYRC's Community Resource Fair last week! We came together with other community partners like Cascade AIDS Project to share resources and knowledge with our community.

SMYRC is a local nonprofit providing culturally-specific support to LGBTQIA2S+ youth. From gender affirming gear to food pantries, affinity groups, mental health services, and more, SMYRC is dedicated to providing holistic community support.

While Mother’s Day is a time for celebration, we recognize that positive maternal relationships are not everyone’s reality. For people who grew up without a mother, or with a mother who did not meet their care needs, this time can bring up painful feelings. Today, we take a moment to validate that pain, often called a “mother wound,” and provide some suggested readings to guide healing. 🧡
