The difference between good typography and great typography comes down to the details.

This month’s Practical Institute of Creative Survival features Ellen Lupton on the typographic decisions designers make every day—hierarchy, spacing, kerning, and type pairing.

Em dash vs. en dash.
Metric vs. optical kerning.

If you’ve ever second-guessed these, this one’s worth your time.

We’re incredibly grateful to our 2026 AIGA Maine Poster Show juror, Amy Hausmann, Executive Director of the Maine Arts Commission.

Amy volunteered her time to review 75 submissions and thoughtfully curate this year’s exhibition, a challenging task given the strength and range of the work.

Of the submissions, Amy shared: “The posters offer a vivid, layered portrait of Maine’s design community today. The work responds to this moment and to the shared experience of living in this place, reminding us how language can connect and challenge us, help us be heard, and teach us how to listen.”

Join us for the opening reception:
Friday, May 1, 5–7 PM
Flatiron Coffee Bar, Congress Street, Portland
Free and open to the public

The exhibition will remain on view through May in Portland, then travel to Jesup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor this summer and Bangor Public Library this fall.
