Effective May 15, 2026, a total burn ban will be in effect for all of Wheeler County.

Due to increasing fire danger and drying conditions, all outdoor open burning will be prohibited to ensure the safety of our communities.

Prohibited Activities Include:
• Open Burning: Burning of yard debris, slash piles, or agricultural waste.
• Burn Barrels: The use of burn barrels for any purpose.
• Uncontained Fires: Any Fire not permitted

Prior to May 15, residents choosing to burn are reminded that they are legally and financially responsible for any fire or flame they ignite. Use extreme caution, never leave a fire unattended, and ensure you have a water source readily available.

Fire regulations can vary by specific location. Residents and visitors are strongly encouraged to check with their local fire jurisdictions for specific questions or concerns:
• Fossil Fire Department
• Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department
• Spray Volunteer Fire Department
• Wheeler County Fire & Rescue
• Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF)
