Many leaders focus solely on the bottom line, forgetting it's built by people. The real difference-maker? Simply caring more. Treat others with respect, look them in the eye, and truly listen. These fundamental actions foster genuine connection and can resolve countless issues. It’s about remembering the basic principles we were raised with.

Truly effective leaders are humble enough to admit what they don't know. They don't just point out problems; they bring potential solutions. Stephen Merrill highlights that successful leaders trust their teams to identify issues and even pilot solutions, fostering a culture where growth and innovation can flourish without fear of failure.

Most leaders miss out on growth because they fear failure. But what if failure is the necessary first step? Stephen Merrill points out that in a growth cycle, failure is followed by taking ownership, learning, and then growing. It's about accepting responsibility as a leader, understanding what went wrong, and applying those lessons to prevent repeat mistakes. True leadership isn't about avoiding failure; it's about how you respond to it.

Don't fear getting fired. True leadership isn't about titles or salary, but about honesty, transparency, and vulnerability. When growth gets uncomfortable and things break, trust your abilities and your team to navigate the storm, even when the path isn't clear.

In today's world, genuine connection is more important than ever. As leaders, remember your team members are people first. Showing you care about them as individuals can transform their experience and inspire them to extend that same care to your customers. A simple 'How's your day going?' with real attention can elevate a basic interaction into something exceptional, impacting the entire customer experience.

Stephen Merrill, Customer Service Expert & Coach, breaks down true leadership. It's not about having a title or years of experience. It's about how your behaviors, attitude, and passion positively impact those around you, regardless of your role. You're a leader today.

Customer Service coach Stephen Merrill shares a powerful story. He simply asked an employee about his family and how to pronounce his name correctly. The impact? Skyrocketing productivity, passion, and accuracy. It's a reminder that genuine care transforms everything.

Friends,

Today, we’re excited to share something new.

Registration is officially open for our first ever event, the Local Impact Leadership Summit.

Over the past several years, The Leadership Crucible Foundation has had the privilege of sitting down with extraordinary leaders from across the country. Through hundreds of conversations on The Leadership Crucible Podcast, we’ve explored the crucibles that shape leaders and the lessons they leave behind.

But through those conversations, and after more than 4 decades of public service, one conviction has become abundantly clear.

The leadership that most directly shapes our lives is found right here at home.

It’s found in city halls, county offices, public safety departments, schools, nonprofits, businesses, and community organizations. It’s found in the people who show up every day committed to making their communities safer, stronger, and better. Because lasting change doesn’t happen from the top down. It begins from the ground up.

That conviction is why we created the Local Impact Leadership Summit.

This half-day, live online leadership experience is designed to help local leaders build trust, lead through change, and strengthen the communities they serve.

It isn’t another policy conference or technical training. It’s about making the shift from knowing the job to effectively leading people.

If you’re carrying more responsibility than ever before, trying to accomplish more with fewer resources, developing the next generation of leaders, or simply looking to become a better leader for your organization and community, this Summit was built with you in mind.

Because there’s no playbook for building trust, navigating change, shaping culture, and leading people through uncertainty. That’s why we’re bringing together practical leadership insights you can immediately apply where you live and serve.

Join us on Thursday, November 5 at 10am CST for this live online experience and become the leader your community can count on.

The best leaders never stop learning.

Rear Admiral Mike Studeman spent decades leading at the highest levels of the U.S. Navy, and one lesson has remained constant: growth isn’t accidental. It’s built through intentional habits practiced day after day.

In this video, Mike shares three simple habits that have helped him continue learning throughout his career—from reading widely to capturing ideas and reflecting through journaling.

If you want to become a better leader, don’t just chase more information. Build a system that helps you turn knowledge into wisdom.

Learning is not something great leaders finish. It is something the...

Federal and state officials often try to dictate local actions without understanding community needs. Providing clear guidelines and economic support, then allowing local ex*****on, would be far more effective.
