CJI is an incubator for grassroots organizations engaged in strategic criminal justice movement work criminal legal system.

CJI Circle members fund grassroots activism to transform the criminal legal system in the United States by:

* Promoting the leadership of activists who are formerly incarcerated and/or directly impacted by state-sanctioned violence to rethink concepts of justice, and

* Bringing activist-donors and grassroots leaders to the same table, sharing resources and decision-making across lines of race, class, faith, age, gender, and sexual orientation. Our mission is to end mass criminalization and mass incarceration by building and strengthening the infrastructure of the grassroots criminal justice movement to bring about a fundamental transformation of the U.S. We fund where the movement is developing, shifting, and growing. We believe this movement should be led by those most impacted by the injustices of the current system, working in solidarity across race, class, faith, gender, gender identity, sexuality, immigration status, and age. We envision a future where the United States has atoned for its violent history of slavery which has been perpetuated by and through the criminal legal system and its draconian and racist policies that have resulted in the world’s highest incarceration rate. We believe this revolutionary transformation should be led by those most impacted by the failed systems we seek to replace and must necessarily advance solutions that prioritize healing and investment in those communities most impacted by the trauma of mass criminalization and mass incarceration.
