We came back from Santa Marta, Colombia, after attending the first-ever Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels Conference, with a lot to say.

The conference included three days of sectoral organizing, a People’s Summit gathering hundreds of civil society members, and two days of high-level dialogues with 57 governments. From centering care work in the just transition, to resisting false solutions, to amplifying Southern and Pacific leadership — feminists showed up and made our voices heard.

To ensure a just transition away from fossil fuels, we must honor hard-won frameworks, uplift frontline communities, and ensure this process is never seized by those who caused the crisis in the first place.

Our latest Critical Conversation explores the specifics of lithium, a mineral often referenced in critical minerals conversations — what it’s used for and what that use means — as well as how the politics around energy and extraction have changed in recent years.

▶️ Watch the full conversation with Thea Riofrancos, a political scientist and researcher whose work examines resource extraction, the global lithium sector, and the politics of the energy transition, at wedo.org/conversations.

As the First Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels Conference in Santa Marta, Colombia wraps up, WEDO’s Sinéad Magner and Mara Dolan sit down to share a few reflections from the ground, including:

💭 How feminist just transition priorities like care are showing up in the dialogues
💭 How civil society and movements engaged, and who else is here influencing the space
💭 What advocates are looking towards as next steps

Stay tuned for more feminist analysis of the outcomes and commitments emerging from the conference.

🎉 We are thrilled to share the new report — Towards Economic and Climate Justice: A Feminist Analysis of Critical Trends.

The Critical Trends report finds:
📈 Accelerated by the electoral advance of ultra-right-wing and other fundamentalist forces, 2025 saw one of the most significant rollbacks of human rights, gender equality, and civic space in recent decades, by both governments and corporations. The myth of a partnership- and rules-based multilateral order has unravelled, as evidenced by the Global North’s blatant exercises of power and economic coercion.

📉 Public and grant-based financing for climate, development, and gender justice is decreasing even below previous shortfalls — directly driven by corporate capture, wealth hoarding, militarization, tax abuse, punitive debt regimes, and other forms of structural exploitation.

✊ Across all seven focus areas, the consequences of neoliberalism fall disproportionately on women, communities in the Global South, and those most marginalized, but there are powerful movements and proposals pushing back.

While some countries were trying to backtrack on women’s rights at CSW70 last week, WEDO was on the ground fighting for the recognition and inclusion of care in climate and just transition policy.

“We cannot transition from a fossil fuel-based economy built on the backs of women and their unpaid care work to another economy of renewable energy, still built on the backs of women and their unpaid care work."
— Mara Dolan, Policy Coordinator at WEDO, closed out the side event titled "Care and Climate: How Care Systems Shape Access to Justice in a Just Transition."

In celebration of , we share this conversation between WEDO Executive Director Bridget Burns and Thais Corral, one of WEDO's co-founders and founder of Sinal do Vale. 🌿✨

During COP30 in Brazil, Bridget sat down with Thais for a heartfelt conversation. Together, they dive into the early days of WEDO, the friendships and collaborations that shaped the organization, and the kind of feminist leadership the world needs now.

Join us in honoring the founders whose courage and vision not only built this organization but also helped influence global movements for gender equality and environmental justice. We feel incredibly lucky to carry forward the work they began.

On International Women’s Day, we’re joining partners across the UN climate community to share how we are acting on gender equality and climate.

Acting on gender equality in climate means more than commitments. It means shifting power, resources, and accountability.

At WEDO, we work alongside feminist movements around the world to help make that shift real.

Through the Women Delegates Fund 🦋, we support women leaders from climate-vulnerable regions to engage in and influence global climate negotiations.

Through the Gender Climate Tracker✅, we monitor women’s participation and leadership in climate negotiations, helping hold institutions accountable for progress on gender equality.

Through the Gender and Environment Data Alliance (GEDA) 📊, we support feminist data initiatives that document how climate and environmental crises affect people’s lives and inform more just policies.

And through the Gender-Just Climate Solutions Scale Fund 🌿, we help move resources directly to feminist, community-led climate solutions already building resilient futures.

The Belém Gender Action Plan provides an important roadmap. Our focus is ensuring it translates into real leadership, real resources, and real accountability.
