One of our favorite traditions at the Kicking Butt 5K is seeing the incredible team shirts, costumes, signs, and tributes that honor loved ones lost to colorectal cancer and celebrate the survivors who inspire us every day.

The good news: Louisville drivers are spending more time reflecting on life's priorities.

The bad news: It's because I-65 is closed in both directions.

If you're sitting in traffic thinking, "There has to be a better use of my time," we have an idea.

We're looking for Colonoscopy Transport Volunteers to help patients get to life-saving screenings. The traffic still won't be great, but at least you can feel like a superhero while reminiscing about when it only took 10 minutes to get all the way across town.

The orange barrels may be unavoidable. But with your help, colon cancer could be.

Stage IV diagnoses are among the hardest to treat, but new advances are helping shift the tide. By finding 4x as many cancers when added to current screenings and detecting disease before symptoms appear, this technology could give patients a better chance at earlier treatment and improved outcomes.

Meet Our Keynote Speaker: Chief Mark Furnish

The Colon Cancer Prevention Project is honored to welcome Chief Mark Furnish, retired Chief of the Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department, as our keynote speaker at the 2026 Kicking Butt 5K in support of the Bruce DeArk First Responders Education Program.

Chief Furnish was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2022 during his very first colonoscopy at age 59. Inspired by fellow firefighter Bruce DeArk's commitment to raising awareness about colorectal cancer—and encouraged by his wife, Janna—Mark made the decision to get screened. Because he took action, his cancer was detected early, and today he is proudly cancer-free.

After a remarkable 44-year career serving and protecting his community, Mark retired from the fire service in 2025. Today, he shares his story to encourage others—especially fellow first responders—to prioritize their health and get screened. Mark and his wife, Janna, are proud parents of two daughters and grandparents to two grandchildren.

Mark's story reflects the mission of the Bruce DeArk First Responders Education Program, which was created to honor Bruce's dedication to protecting those at increased risk for colorectal cancer. Through this program, first responders receive education about their elevated cancer risks and the importance of prevention and early detection.

This year's event also celebrates the expansion of the Colon Cancer Prevention Project's services into Southern Indiana through an incredible partnership with the Clark County, Indiana Health Department. Together, we are increasing access to colorectal cancer education, screening navigation, transportation assistance, lifesaving colonoscopies, and first responder cancer prevention resources for those who need them most.

Their stories are our strongest tool for prevention. Every time a survivor shares their journey, more people learn their risk, get screened, and take action.

This Mother’s Day, do what your mother taught you to do: ask awkward questions because you care.

Specifically, ask about her butt.

Has she had her colonoscopy? Does she know her family history? Is she ignoring symptoms because she’s too busy taking care of literally everyone else first?

Honestly, moms spent years asking us questions far more invasive than this. Consider it payback.

Buy the flowers. Call your mom. Then gently derail the conversation with preventative healthcare.

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers with on-time screening.
