Skin grafts. Burn contracture releases. Scar removals. These are the types of surgeries that give children back their childhood — and in the countries where CURE works, so many are still waiting due to a systemic lack of child-focused treatment. Every time a national doctor learns a new reconstructive technique from one of our surgical teams (both national and international staff), more children get access to care closer to home. That's the kind of change that lasts, and the kind we're striving for!

When Djibril was born with a cleft lip, his village had never seen a condition like it. Fear and misunderstanding spread quickly. Some people called it a curse, others said it was a demon.

"I had a pain in my heart. I didn't know what to do. I was crying," his mother, Kadi, remembers.

Despite the rejection surrounding her, Kadi held on to hope. She and her oldest son worked odd jobs to save up money for the bus to Niamey, Niger's capital city. She didn't know where she would take Djabril when she got there. She just knew she had to take him somewhere with more resources than their village.

Once Kadi and Djabril reached Niamey, a local hospital directed them to the CURE Children's Hospital of Niger. Once admitted, Djibril received the corrective surgery* he needed.

After a successful surgery, Djibril went home with a smile that spoke for itself. As Kadi put it, "I can't wait to go back home and show people how my child healed. No one will laugh at us now."
