Special Olympics Michigan serves 23,000+ children & adults with intellectual disabilities through year-round sports, training and competition, building a more inclusive Michigan. The mission of Special Olympics Michigan is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Athletes develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy while participating in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship among their families, Special Olympics athletes and the community. Donations from Michigan citizens and businesses provide funding for the program.

Your mind matters just as much as your muscles. ❤️🧠 On World Mental Health Day, we’re reminding everyone that strength isn’t just physical. It’s having the courage to speak up, the confidence to ask for help, and the compassion to check in on those around us.

Whether you’re an athlete, coach, volunteer, or supporter, remember that mental health matters on and off the field. Remember to check on your teammates. Check on yourself. And remember, you belong here!!

Making waves for inclusion starts with young leaders ready to make a difference. 🌊 Today, Special Olympics Michigan athletes and unified partners in the Upper Peninsula came together for our 2026 Leadership Launch learning about different leadership styles, discovering their own strengths and building tools they can take back to their schools to create more inclusive communities.

Nearly 50 years of showing up for Special Olympics Michigan! Long before Jim Hornak was named to the 2026 Marcy Weston CMU Athletics Hall of Fame, he was helping create opportunities for SOMI athletes. For nearly five decades, Jim served on Games Committees for our State Summer and Winter Games lending his time, leadership and heart to generations of athletes, coaches, volunteers and families. His extraordinary commitment to our movement also earned him a place in the Special Olympics Michigan Hall of Fame.

From educating and coaching generations of students at Central Michigan University to nearly 50 years of service to Special Olympics Michigan, Jim’s legacy is measured in far more than wins. It’s measured in the people and communities he helped make better along the way.

Congratulations Jim on being named to the 2026 Marcy Weston Central Michigan Athletics Hall Of Fame. Thank you for nearly five decades of believing in our athletes!
