Kent County Food Policy Council

Kent County Food Policy Council Our mission is to advocate for and promote a Good Food system in Kent County.

The Kent County Food Policy Council was formed in 2021 to inform local policy and decision makers on the current and future issues that will impact local food production, consumption, and access. We envision Kent County as a place where everyone can enjoy a thriving Good Food system. We prioritize the values of equity, sustainability and thriving economies (Good Food Charter).

A good food system is equitable. 🌱

This means ensuring that everyone in our community has access to healthy, culturally appropriate food and that opportunities across the food system are shared fairly. The Kent County Food System Plan recognizes that lasting change requires centering community voices and addressing the disparities that affect who grows, accesses, and benefits from our food system.

Building a stronger food system means creating pathways for every resident to thrive.

In Kent County, access to healthy, affordable, and culturally relevant food is not equal. Rising food costs, transportation barriers, and gaps in availability continue to impact our neighbors and communities.

By centering equity, sustainability, and community voices, we can build a food system where everyone has access to the nourishment they need to thrive.

Thank you to Kent District Library for co-hosting our screening and discussion panel for "Did You Guys Eat? ¿Ya comieron?" and to everyone who joined us for an evening of learning, reflection, and conversation.

This powerful documentary highlighted the stories of farm workers and migrant laborers in Michigan, while shedding light on the people, experiences, and unseen systems behind every meal on our tables. We are grateful to all who attended and engaged in meaningful conversations about building a more just and equitable food system.

Have you heard of Kent County Community Action's Home Delivered Meals program?

The program provides nutritious, culturally familiar meals that help older adults maintain their health, independence, and dignity while remaining safely in their homes. Participants report improved nutrition, better overall wellbeing, and consistent access to healthy meals.

In recognition of Older Michiganians Day during Community Action Month, we’re highlighting KCCA’s Home Delivered Meals program and the impact it has on older adults in our community. ❤️

The program provides nutritious, culturally familiar meals that help older adults maintain their health, independence, and dignity while remaining safely in their homes. Participants report improved nutrition, better overall wellbeing, and consistent access to healthy meals.

Home Delivered Meals also provide important social connection and wellness support. For some participants, their delivery driver may be the only person they regularly see during the week, making each visit an important check on their safety and wellbeing.

Through bilingual services, culturally responsive meals, and compassionate support, KCCA is helping older adults stay healthy, connected, and independent.
