July Advanced Fly Tying Night

This month, we will demonstrate a version of the Welshman's Button (Chocolate Drop). A fun caddis pattern that teaches three great tying techniques for the body, wing, and antenna.

Fly Tying Night at Attaboy Brewery 🍻

Last month we gathered at Attaboy Brewery for a fun evening of fly tying, and we were excited to welcome both club members and several newcomers interested in learning more about the hobby.

With a great turnout of first-time tyers, Rick quickly became the evening's designated instructor, helping everyone get started and sharing plenty of tips along the way. Thanks to his patience and expertise, a number of new flies were successfully tied—including my very first Elk Hair Caddis. Now I’m just hoping it helps me catch at least one fish!

We're hopeful that events like this will continue to introduce new people to fly fishing and help grow our club. Thanks to everyone who came out, and we look forward to tying with you again soon!

Join us tomorrow June 9th at the Catoctin Creek Park & Nature Center for an evening of fishing, food, friendly competition, and fish tales!

🐟 Fishing Contest – 4:00–6:00 PM
Catch as many fish as you can! Any species counts, any fly goes. Winner must reveal their secret strategy!

🎯 Casting Accuracy Contest – 5:00 PM
Think you've got the skills? Bring your own setup or use one of our loaners.

🍔 Dinner – 6:00 PM
Hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, and all the fixings provided. Feel free to bring a side, chips, or dessert to share!

😂 Liars Contest – During Dinner
The bigger the fish story, the better. Entertaining lies are highly encouraged!

April Member Spotlight 🎣

Let's give a big shout out to the one and only, Pete Ring!

From getting skunked to landing 100-fish days—Pete’s fly fishing journey is one of persistence, passion, and pure adventure.

Fishing since age 5, Pete picked up fly fishing after moving to Colorado and struggled early on. But one unforgettable backcountry trip—catching fish on nearly every cast—changed everything. That’s when he was truly hooked.

After joining PVFF in 2015, Pete discovered a welcoming community of humble anglers who share the same passion—quickly proving that fly fishing clubs are anything but “elite.”

Go-to flies? Circus Peanuts, Blow Torches, and anything he can see on top.
Proudest moment? Landing a 23” wild brown after a 10-month pursuit 🔥
Favorite challenge? Exploring untouched waters—where discovery matters just as much as the catch.

Pete’s also a proud outing host, a self-proclaimed gear ju**ie, and someone who values the experience as much as the fish.

Best advice for beginners:
👉 Connect with a mentor
👉 Be patient (knots and trees happen 😅)
👉 Take in the scenery—trout live in beautiful places

Fun facts:
• Still hasn’t caught a trout in his home state of NY 🤯
• Never fished a hatch
• Doesn’t tie flies... it's not for everyone
• His son's middle name is “Fisher”… but he doesn’t like to fish (he tried 😂)

BHC ROUND 2! 🎣 Earlier this month, a small but dedicated crew of PVFF anglers braved the rain and made their way to Big Hunting Creek for another cleanup—this time tackling a more challenging stretch.

Based on the evidence, the official beverage of litter bugs appears to be... *drum roll* 🥁 ... Busch Lite!

Bag by bag, the crew worked their way through the mess, leaving the area a whole lot cleaner than they found it—and proving once again that a few determined folks can make a big difference.

Days like this remind us just how special this community is. Dirty hands, good laughs, and cleaner water at the end of it all.
