Steven K. Green uses the recent “Rededicate 250” event on the National Mall as reason to explore “What Jefferson and Madison would have thought about ‘rededicating’ the US to God.”

Both men were committed to advancing religious freedom because they saw it as deeply entwined with freedom of inquiry and conscience. “Reason and free enquiry are the only effectual agents against error,” Jefferson wrote in 1784. Allowing people to investigate ideas freely “will support the true religion,” because “Truth can stand by itself.”

Thirteen years on, people are still finding (and appreciating) the American Freethought documentary series. National Secular Society historian Bob Forder recently wrote about the series in The Freethinker, praising it as “a serious and polished attempt to tell the story of freethought in the USA and examine its important influence on the way that nation has developed.”

It seems to me that freethinkers and secularists are bad at recording, sharing, and promoting their own history.…
