A Gold Medal Story 🥇

YMCA member Esperanza Alzona and her family have been part of the YMCA of Frederick County since 1994. Over the years, the Y has been part of their lives through swim lessons, camps, swim team, and more with family members even working as lifeguards and swim instructors.

Today, Esperanza and her husband still visit the Y almost daily. Weight lifting, yoga, and cross-training at the Downtown Y are all part of the routine that helps Esperanza prepare for one of her passions: fencing.

Most recently, Esperanza competed at the Pan American Veteran Fencing Championships in Lima, Peru, earning a bronze medal in the Saber Team event and GOLD in Veteran Women’s Foil, making her a Pan American Champion!

For Esperanza and her family, the Y has been a place to stay healthy, active, and connected for more than 30 years.

Congratulations, Esperanza! If you see her at the Downtown Y, be sure to celebrate this incredible achievement with her.
