What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?
I have always been passionate about the sciences since childhood. In college, I majored in Biology, where I was introduced to the fields of Genetics and Biochemistry. During that time, there was significant excitement surrounding the Human Genome Project, which further sparked my interest in science and medicine. As I learned more about its potential impact on understanding and treating illness and disease, I became increasingly inspired by the possibilities for improving human health. This experience ultimately motivated me to pursue a career as a physician.

What's a fun fact about you that people might not know?
I love karaoke and I’m an intermediate quilter. My love of karaoke goes way back; when I left the Philippines for residency, my mom gifted me a portable karaoke machine to take with me, and it has remained a fun connection to home and family ever since.

As for quilting, I love the process of cutting, arranging, and piecing everything together. There’s something very meditative about it, and in many ways it reminds me of medicine, taking individual pieces of information and bringing them together to understand the bigger picture.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
Someone once reminded me that we are boundless and limitless — and that has never left me. Every day is an opportunity to grow a little more, learn a little more, and give a little more. I try to bring that energy into my practice and into every patient relationship. We are all capable of more than we think, and I believe that wholeheartedly — for myself and for every person who walks through our doors.

“As I conclude my five-year tenure on the Columbus Medical Association Foundation (CMAF) Youth Council, I am reflecting on how much this experience has shaped me since joining in 7th grade,” writes Imani Akita, recent graduate of Westerville South High School.

“Through this council, I had the opportunity to help make philanthropic decisions and award over $100,000 in grant funding to local nonprofit organizations. These organizations focus on healthcare-related initiatives that impact the youth in Columbus, such as mental health, addiction, bullying, racial equity, and access to basic needs.

I am most grateful that I was surrounded by other students who were equally passionate about creating change within their communities. Being part of colleagues so dedicated to helping others made this experience even more meaningful.

Additionally, I also served as the Youth Council Board Liaison, where I reported to the CMAF board on the council’s work and grantmaking decisions. This role gave me deeper insight into nonprofit leadership and the importance of including youth voices in decision-making spaces.

As this chapter of my high school journey comes to an end, I am incredibly grateful to the Columbus Medical Association Foundation for believing in me and giving me this great opportunity. I look forward to continuing my passion for service and using my voice to create meaningful change in the future.”

Thank you for your leadership and service, Imani!

You’ve already made a meaningful impact and have set a powerful example for future council members. We know there’s so much more ahead!
