We all show up in different ways for the ones we love — even when they’re no longer with us.

Tom Whalen is a dedicated Walk to End Alzheimer’s emcee and volunteer who shows up year after year in honor of his twin brother, Mike, who had Alzheimer’s.

Because he lived in another state, Tom didn’t see the changes in his brother firsthand. A conversation with his sister-in-law marked a turning point. She shared that Mike, once an accountant, was no longer able to do his job. He was just 49 years old.

As twins, their bond was unique. Tom remembers Mike as “a better athlete, a better man, a better father,” but most of all, a beloved part of a close-knit family. Through the loss of his twin brother, Tom found a way to turn his family's grief into purpose.

An on-air broadcaster, Tom was introduced to the Alzheimer’s Association when he was invited to join a Walk to End Alzheimer’s team. What started as a simple invitation quickly grew into something much more meaningful.

“I participate as a way to honor my brother. I wasn’t a hands-on caregiver, so this is a way to do something.” And “something” has become a decade of impact. For the past 10 years, Tom has served as the emcee at his local Walk, bringing energy, heart and connection.

When asked what his brother might think of his ongoing dedication to Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Tom shared “Mike had a dry sense of humor. He would likely rip me a new one and then hug and kiss me.”

💜 This National Brothers Day, we celebrate Tom and Mike’s story — and all the brothers and families impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Join Tom by participating in a Walk to End Alzheimer’s near you visit alz.org/walk.

🎾 From the time 14-year-old Jonathan Squitieri picked up a tennis racquet at age four, the sport has been a constant part of his life. Tennis has given him more than competition and community — it’s become a powerful way to make a difference.

Jonathan turned his passion for tennis into a way to honor his Nana by participating in Do What You Love to End ALZ. He channels his love for the game into meaningful action that brings people together on the court to raise awareness and funds in the fight to end Alzheimer’s.

With the help and support of his parents, Jonathan hosted his first Acing Alzheimer’s event when he was 12 years old. Now in its third year, the event continues to grow with players of all ages taking the court. Acing Alzheimer’s has raised over $42,000 in total to support the Alzheimer’s Association.

What fuels Jonathan year after year is knowing the impact goes beyond fundraising. “It brings me joy to support a cause that has impacted my family,” he shares. “I know every day that my Nana would be proud of me.”

Jonathan hopes his story inspires other kids and teens to take action in their own way. “There are so many ways to get involved in Do What You Love to End ALZ,” he says. “It feels so good to do something to make the world a better place, even if it’s just a small contribution.”

💜 This National Tennis Month, we’re celebrating Jonathan and all of the other Do What You Love to End ALZ participants who are turning their passion into action to help end Alzheimer’s. Join them by visiting alz.org/dowhatyoulove.
