Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids Established in 2008, Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids is a 501c3 Non-Profit, Animal Medical Organization Ellie’s plight became our inspiration.

Our Story

This is the story of how Critter Crusaders was founded. In Feb 2008, a two year old Siberian Husky named Ellie, was surrendered to the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter by her owner. Going blind from cataracts, the shelter was unable to afford the medical procedure that would restore her sight and make her adoptable. As shelter volunteers, we interacted with Ellie and could see the bleak reality of her future. She was one of countless other shelter animals in need of medical attention. Things became crystal clear to us. Homeless animals deserved access to medical care as a means to increase their adoptability and make them healthy. Our goal was set for Ellie. Raise the money and restore her sight. With the financial help of many generous people across Eastern Iowa, that goal was a success! Ellie received sight saving surgery in Ames. After recuperating, she was adopted in May 2008 by a family from Omaha, NE. On Friday, June 6th, 2008, Ellie and her family returned to Cedar Rapids to make an appearance at Grant Wood School to an all school assembly. They were there to say “Thank You” to the students who had helped raise funds for Ellie’s surgery. One week later, on Friday, June 13th, the Cedar River crested in a catastrophic event that changed lives forever. Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities experienced an epic flood, which wiped out the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter and displaced hundreds of pets from their homes. That disaster strengthened our conviction to help our local homeless animals. In February 2009, Triton, a 6-week-old puppy with a badly broken front leg, limped into the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter. With the help of many doctors and a great foster family, we were able to facilitate a complex surgery that included growing new bone while in an external fixator device. From start to finish this was a 4 month commitment of time and resources, and once again the public responded to our request for financial help. Our non-profit was first formed in the name of Friends of Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter. On March 19, 2009, we became an official 501c3. Later our name was officially changed to Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids on April 21, 2011. Our role has greatly expanded over the years to include partnerships with local rescues and shelters in Eastern Iowa. We are committed to assisting homeless, abused and neglected animals with advanced medical care that saves lives, mends broken bodies and restores health, happiness and adoptability. A true second chance at life. The commitment to form Critter Crusaders came from Ellie. The vision we had for her then, is the mission we continue today. One dog and one horrible time in Iowa’s history inspired us to succeed on behalf of all local homeless animals. We exist to provide the care they desperately need and deserve. This is our passion! ‼️Another Emergency Tonight‼️

Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids has just taken a case that hit the doors of Blue Pearl Cedar Rapids. We do not have a lot of information yet, but we have a barely one year old mastiff/dane mix male. This boy has been on the floor of a home for multiple days. A family member reached out for help.

This boy’s name is Goat. He has grossly swollen joints and in the video it is easy to see that he cannot bend them. He has not been able to walk and has a high fever. Our suspicion is an immune mediated condition. The doctors and techs at Blue Pearl are assessing him now. This is another huge case. CC will be handling Goat’s medical care. Our good friends at Last Hope Animal Rescue have accepted him into their rescue.

More to come as we gather information. Please say a prayer for this youngster.❤️🐾

‼️Emergency Hit By Car Puppy‼️
‼️Donations Very Much Appreciated‼️

We feel horrible, asking for donations, constantly. But the cases that we take at Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids are big ones, very expensive and very complex. We have also been inundated with hit by car dogs and cats over the past few weeks. When we take a case like this, due to the cost and seriousness of the injury, more often than not, it is life saving for the animals we assist.

This beautiful approx. 5-6 month old puppy is hospitaized tonight at Iowa State University Hixson-Lied Small Animal Hospital. He does not yet have a name. We received a call for help from our great friends at Ames Animal Services. This puppy was tied to a tree in Ames Iowa. He apparently broke free at some point and was hit by a car. He was transported emergently to ISU.

Tonight he very painful. The ER Service has stabilized him. They have a concern for lung contusions from the blunt force trauma. He does have multiple wounds and abrasions as well a fractured front limb. He will be transferred to the orthopedic surgery service tomorrow for further evaluation and surgery if he remains stable. We are in the beginning stages of this journey and hopefully soon, we will have a name and know more about his injuries.

No matter what, we will ensure that this beautiful Shepherd/Husky mix pup will receive the very best medical and surgical care possible. It is absolutely true and abundantly clear over the past few weeks with our emergency intakes, that bad people fail animals and good people save them.❤️🐾

If you are so fortunate to donate, words just can’t adequately express how grateful we are to all of our supporters and followers. We could not do this incredible work without you. We know times are tough. Veterinary costs are extremely high.

Donations can be made on our secure website at CritterCrusadersCR.Org with your choice of financial platform at checkout. Donations can also be mailed to:

A team of compassion for Jade❤️

We thank everyone for their donations to Jade’s emergency care and neurological diagnostics at BluePearl Pet Hospital Pet Hospital Des Moines on her original post at the time of hit by car injury.

On Jade’s most recent update, we mentioned that we had contacted Iowa State University Hixson-Lied Small Animal Hospital and their wonderful inpatient rehabilitation service. This is where Honey spent several months recovering from her head injury. These specialized services are not inexpensive, but they are so worth the effort for our most physically challenged pet patients, like Jade.

❤️We have DOUBLE the good news! ISU accepted Jade into rehabilitation and thanks to Andre from Tails in Transit Rescue, she was transported yesterday and is in her second day of physical therapy which is essential for her recovery.

❤️The next part of this great news is a HUGE thank you to a wonderful young couple who are great supporters of Critter Crusaders! Sydney Cone and her husband Gabe Christianson donated to Jade’s recovery fund and their compassion will allow us to fully pay for her rehabilitation! Sydney fostered and adopted Sheba, who was cared for by CC. Ironically, Sheba was also hit by a car and injured. We cannot thank them enough for their advocacy for homeless animals in our area!❤️

❤️In the attached photos, we have Jade at ISU Rehabilitation with Joanna Hildreth, head of the department and Sydney and Gabe with their “kids Sheba and Huck with CC’s Julie Billett.🐾

We have so many pet patients to tell you about! Meet Maisie!❤️🐾

This tiny kitten was found on a roadway in Urbana by a Good Samaritan who called for help. There was no doubt this kid was hit by a car or perhaps ran into a moving tire. We received the call for help and took this case immediately. This happened on September 27th. Our great friends at Hero's Haven Animal Rescue took Maisie into their organization and Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids took her traumatic medical case.

Maisie has absolutely AMAZED all of us….from Dr. Ellsworth at North Star Veterinary Clinic, to the ER Service and Orthopedic Surgery Service at Iowa State University Hixson-Lied Small Animal Hospital! This itty, bitty girl had massive injuries at about 4-5 weeks of age. She definitely had a concussion and bilateral femur fractures along with SI joint luxations (the joint that connects the base of the spine to the pelvis). After initial traumatic evaluation with Dr. Loni, Pam Gibney from CC transported Maisie to Ames and into the care of surgical specialists.

Maisie, underwent a CT scan to better assess her orthopedic injuries. The surgeons had a discussion on the best approach for Maisie and the decision was to take the path of least resistance. Due to her young age and tiny size, they decided to allow her own body to do what it does best. Heal itself. A kitten of that age has a superhuman ability to heal bones and wounds! The goal was to let her body heal, and then step in to correct any angulation of the bones when she is a bit older.

One month later, Maisie is active with absolutely no deficits or issues. Dr. Loni took X-rays last week and it is hard to even seen the fractures! Way to go little Maisie!

Is there any wonder why we love and respect these animals so much? We are amazed by their resilience each and every day! So we thank Kim Allsup who found this kitten so battered and injured in Urbana and called for help! There are truly FAR MORE good people in this work than bad. Little Maisie is reaping a lifetime benefit from compassionate people coming together for one tiny kitten!❤️🐾

The Tiny Survivor❤️
Look at ADORABLE Peggy Sue! This little German Shepherd pup came to Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids and into emergency lifesaving surgery for gangrene that set in on her broken hind limb. Peggy had a tib/fib fracture that was properly splinted at a vet clinic. Somehow, the bones shifted and this septic infection took hold in a big way!

Peggy went into emergency leg amputation surgery at Anamosa Vet Clinic. Due to the severe nature of this overwhelming infection, she was transferred to Madison Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Care where she underwent another debridement procedure, recovering in hospital for a couple of days!

Peggy is READY FOR ADOPTION through our great friends at German Shepherd Dog Rescue of Iowa! Being an adorable, bouncing little chicky babe doesn’t slow this tripod pup down! Please help us share and let’s get Peggy her home of a lifetime!❤️🐾

Finally, the update you have been waiting for on our hit by car girl, Jade.❤️

This dog had so many strikes against her. Apparently, the act of tossing her from a car, started a journey of inhumanity. Unwanted. Unloved. Only humans harbor these traits. Once she was loose and confused, she was hit by a car, causing devastating injuries. Thankfully, Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control responded, taking her to Blue Pearl and then to the shelter.

Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids accepted Jade into our medical system late afternoon Oct. 20th, the same time our friends at Tails in Transit pulled her from the shelter and into their rescue system. We made arrangements for Jade to be transported to BluePearl Pet Hospital Des Moines through their ER Service while also alerting their neurosurgery team to the severe physical deficits Jade was experiencing since her trauma.

This girl could not walk. She could not stand to support her weight. Her left front paw was curled up. She had tremors throughout her extremities. The good news however was that she could wag her tail and feel sensation in her limbs. Reason to hope.

Jade went through their ER Service with Dr. Jill Niederhuth, Iowa’s only veterinary neurosurgeon assessing her neurological status. An MRI was scheduled for the next day. The results of the MRI showed the extent of her trauma, with significant swelling and hemorrhage to her cervical spine (the upper spine). The nerve roots of C6-C7 are damaged. This is where the nerves act as a bridge from the spinal cord, sending signals out to the rest of the body, allowing function. This is called a brachial plexus avulsion and it accounts for the dysfunction in Jade’s body. She was struck around the left shoulder and mouth. The good news is the nerves were not completely severed. She should recover in time and with rehabilitation.

The doctors also noted a mandible fracture (lower jaw). While under anesthesia for the MRI, Jade underwent surgical repair of her jaw. It will remain wired for the next several weeks.

She is now released from the hospital and back in Cedar Rapids at her foster home. We have contacted Iowa State University Hixson-Lied Small Animal Hospital today. Our goal is to get Jade into their inpatient rehabilitation program very soon. With neurological injuries like this, it is imperative to get these injured pets into rehab as quickly as possible. ISU’s rehab program and facility is top notch (just ask Honey) and exactly what Jade needs to ensure her very best outcome. Hopefully we will know if they have an open spot for her tomorrow.

‼️This is the absolute sweetest little girl EVER. What her former humans did to her is a punishable offense in Iowa. If anyone has information on the circumstance, please call 319-350-8295.

We thank you so very much for your wonderful donations and prayers. We have a long way to go with this little girl but we are fully committed to her. After all, we have a lot to make up for. She deserves it. More to come on Jade’s journey back to health and functionality.❤️🐾

‼️ Donations Needed‼️Dog Hit By Car‼️

This beautiful dog was traumatically injured last Thursday when she was hit by a vehicle in Cedar Rapids. There were many eye witnesses to the event and she was transported for medical care by Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control.

We received urgent messages for help yesterday from the shelter. They were desperately looking for resources before this girls euthanasia time of 4pm. Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids committed to take her medical case. This allowed our friends at Tails in Transit rescue to accept her into rescue without the financial burden that limits so many organizations with sick and injured pets.

This beautiful girl has a name now, Jade. She is unable to walk. We have attached photos of her at the accident scene shortly after impact in the comment section below. At that point she was able to stand and walk. Today, Jade was transported urgently to BluePearl Pet Hospital Des Moines through their amazing Emergency Service. This hospital has Iowa’s only practicing veterinary neurosurgeon, Dr. Jill Neiderhuth. Jade was assessed and found to have Neurological deficits in all of her limbs, though she has good sensation and intact muscle tone and movement. She can not stand or walk, however.

When we last spoke with Dr. Pruitt tonight, they were running labs work and X-rays. Dr. Niederhuth assessed Jade and tomorrow morning, she will have an MRI of her spine. We are very hopeful for this sweet girl and we firmly believe with these advanced medical interventions and the very real possibility of neurosurgery, Jade will have a positive outcome.

Everyone is in love with this sweet girl. The vet techs are in her hospital kennel with her constantly. Jades resilience and gentle, accepting attitude has melted all of our hearts despite her circumstance.

We would be so grateful for any financial assistance. Her bill right now is in the $2000 range and tomorrow’s MRI will be around $5000. If surgery is needed and we think it will be, this case could skyrocket to over $14,000. Critter Crusaders steps off of a big cliff every time we take a complex, critical case. It is a lot of money, but in our eyes, these homeless pets deserve a chance to live. We have one chance to do the right thing for her. Jade, we gotcha little girl.❤️🐾

If you are so fortunate as to donate, know that 100% of your hard earned funds will go directly to Jade’s bill. Donations can also be made on,our secure website at CritterCrusadersCR.Org with your choice of financial platform at checkout.
We thank you.❤️🐾

Hibachi and Kitten Percy are Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids patients. Their crazy kitty antics are a daily show for foster mom, Trish!

Bachi was hit by a car, suffering a severe traumatic brain injury. Percy was only 4 weeks old when she underwent emergency foreign body surgery in her stomach, saving her life!

Both of these kids are in rescue with S.A.I.N.T. Rescue (Saving Animals in Need Today).

GREAT NEWS FOR OUR “HUNK OF BURNING LOVE”!❤️🐾

Skrap, from our friends at Cedar Valley Pit Bull Rescue, underwent surgery through Critter Crusaders on September 29th at BluePearl Pet Hospital Cedar Rapids. Skrap had a huge Mast Cell Tumor on his lower back (photo included in the comment section). Before his surgery, Skrap underwent complete cancer staging. This is where we look for signs of metastasis in the lungs, lymph nodes and abdomen. The tumor was isolated to the deeper layers of his skin. Dr. Rhonda Aper, a surgical specialist, removed this massive lesion and we now have the pathology report back.

Skrap is cancer free! He has clean margins with no remnants of tumor anywhere! This lesion was also a low grade, slow growing, slowly dividing cancer which is a great long term predictor of outcome.

From the beginning of this case, we felt he would do fantastic. CC has over 18 years of experience in treating all types of cancer in dogs and cats. We were very optimistic for this wonderful boy who deserves a long, healthy and happy life. The future is all yours son! Skrap, who we also call the happiest of all dogs, is pictured here with his foster momma, Lori Parks. We love you buddy. You deserve this great news!❤️🐾
