In a new piece for Nonprofit Quarterly, New Profit Partner Kathryn Peters makes the case that focusing on "fighting polarization" won't heal our deeply divided political life. Instead, what actually moves people is a vision of a future worth building together, and the ability to do so amid disagreement.

She points to New Profit portfolio organizations like Future Caucus, which helps young legislators across party lines deliver real wins for their constituents, and Generation Citizen, which gives high schoolers the tools to tackle problems in their own communities.

“The ultimate goal of a democracy is not consensus; it’s to reach decisions collaboratively, transparently, and fairly,” writes Peters.

We’re excited to introduce you to the 12 changemaking organizations in our 2026 Unlocked Futures Catalyze cohort.

Organizations in this cohort are led by formerly incarcerated or directly impacted social entrepreneurs — leaders whose lived experience makes them the right people to reimagine the U.S. legal system. Through their work, they're opening economic pathways, breaking the cycle of recidivism, and building a future where people can live with dignity and communities are whole.

Each organization receives $100,000 in unrestricted grants, $10,000 in funding for leadership development, strategic advisory support, and a peer learning community over one year.

What does working with a philanthropic intermediary actually deliver?

An independent evaluation by Brandeis University found that 100 percent of New Profit's multi-year portfolio grantees reported satisfaction with their relationship.

Board Chairs echoed that enthusiasm, giving New Profit a Net Promoter Score of 88—a level of trust rarely seen in any sector and well above industry benchmarks.

Alumni leaders continued to report improvements in board development, leadership growth, organizational strategy, and access to networks years after formal funding ended.

For early-stage organizations: 75% gained access to new funders and 65% secured unrestricted funding, helping to bridge the "capital chasm" many face.
