Better Terms is a podcast miniseries featuring the voices of founders and funders working toward mental health equity. Each episode explores the defining moments that shape why they do this work and what becomes possible when funding grows into true partnership.

In the first episode, Aaron Landrum, of The Deloitte Health Institute, and Erica Smith, CEO of
Boys to Men Tucson and member of New Profit's 2025 Mental Health Equity Cohort, reflect on the experiences that shaped their work. From Aaron’s memories of his grandfather in Boston to Erica’s work creating healing spaces for Black and brown men in Tucson, the conversation explores masculinity, vulnerability, systems change, and why “systems need to be restructured — people don’t need to be fixed.”

What is required of us today in order to create the future we desire? ⭐ Shruti Sehra, New Profit CEO, draws on a powerful lesson from her father, an engineer at NASA who spent his career building toward something most people could not yet imagine.

Shruti heard him speak shortly before his retirement, where he declared that personal flying vehicles (think: Jetsons vibes 🚀) would be commonplace "in the short term." When she asked what he meant, he told her that at NASA, short term means within 50 years.

"What my father's work taught me is that the short term and the long term are not in competition. They are the same work, seen at different scales. The question is whether we have the courage to hold both."

Shruti unpacks what this means for the social impact sector today: how to navigate funding volatility and policy headwinds while boldly investing in the future — through invention, intentionality, and community — and why proximity to communities is the key to lasting change.

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with social entrepreneurs has enhanced our understanding of the value of proximity and relationship-building to advancing impact. This approach keeps us grounded in what's actually happening, rather than leading with top-down assumptions from conference rooms or strategy retreats.

Right now, our portfolio leaders and field networks are surfacing some critical themes that can help all of us—funders, donors, nonprofits, policymakers, and community leaders—to navigate this era of uncertainty with clarity, purpose, and impact.

Today, we're sharing an important update about New Profit's leadership.

After 5 years leading the organization, including serving as our first post-founder CEO, Tulaine Montgomery is transitioning into a new role as a New Profit Proximity Fellow, where she'll continue developing her vision for proximate, love-centered leadership. Eliza Greenberg will be helping to support the transition while moving from the President role into a Senior Advisor role.

We're proud to announce that our Board of Directors has unanimously appointed Shruti Sehra as CEO and Molly O'Donnell as President.

Shruti and Molly assume leadership at a pivotal moment for the sector—one that demands both steadiness and ambition. The two leaders bring a combined three decades of New Profit experience, a track record of results, and deep relationships across the investor and social entrepreneur community.
