Congratulations to this year's the Nobel Peace prize winners—both of them call attention to the violence against women.

Women for Women International has a program in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is well acquainted with Denis Mukegwe's years of work as a gynecologist— repairing women's bodies and providing a safe haven for then to heal at his clinic. A true hero!

The best part about sponsoring a woman through WfWI is knowing that you have a personal connection and make a difference in one woman's life. This year my sister is Nanban, a 30 year old woman, with two children and a husband that is a farmer living in Angwan Madaki in Nigeria. I just received this letter.(translated here)

I like knowing that my $35 per month goes to this individual rather than part of a general fund for a non profit. WfWI also sends you information about the political and socio-economic conditions of your "sister's" country.

I have heard of women that carry their sponsor's letter with them and proudly show it to others—impressed that someone on the other side of the world cards about them. This is why I support Women for Women International.

Many thanks to Ten Thousand Villages who donated 10% of their sales on March 8 to Women for Women International. They also held a great in-store event with food cooked from the WfWI cookbook "Share" .

For beautiful gifts that are also Fair Trade, stop into Ten Thousand Villages - Boston, and say hello to the manager Gia Stull and her helpful staff at 252 Washington Street in Boston's Downtown Crossing...near Government Center.

Thanks again Ten Thousand Villages Boston (and to Gia who provided me the photos.)

Women for Women International

Through a sponsorship program, Women for Women International helps women in war and conflict areas to earn and save money, improve health and well-being, influence decisions in their home and community, and connect to networks for support.

Since 1993, Women for Women International has helped more than 462,000 marginalized women in countries affected by war and conflict. We serve women in 8 countries offering support, tools, and access to life-changing skills to move from crisis and poverty to stability and economic self-sufficiency. In countries affected by conflict and war, Women for Women International supports the most marginalized women to earn and save money, improve health and well-being, influence decisions in their home and community, and connect to networks for support. By utilizing skills, knowledge, and resources, she is able to create sustainable change for herself, her family, and community.
