This morning, Emily Norton, the Executive Director of Charles River Watershed Association, offered an address at Morning Prayers at Memorial Church, one of Harvard University’s oldest traditions. Her address reminds us to believe in the power of standing together in community with care for the environment. The Charles River Watershed Association is so grateful to have been hosted by the Harvard University Memorial Church.

While the Nor'easter did improve drought conditions in parts of Massachusetts, they have persisted in the Charles River Watershed. Even after rain events, groundwater levels can still be low, leading to a continued drought declaration. This means it is important to limit outdoor water use and report dry environmental conditions to the Massachusetts Water Impact Reporter

Favorite Flora of the Month - red maple!

Have you started to see the leaves change? Well, you may be seeing the red maple, or Acer rubrum! These striking trees are among the most common species in the deciduous forests of the eastern United States. They’re so abundant because they are “generalist species,” able to thrive in a wide range of conditions. Fun fact: these maples are often tapped for their syrup.

Announcing our Meet Your Watershed: Halloween Run Club with Patagonia!

All paces are welcome, so long as you come in your Halloween outfits! Whether that means Halloween-themed colors or a full-on costume, we are looking to celebrate that spooky spirit 🎃

We will meet at the Patagonia Store in Cambridge, on Brattle Street at 9:15. Then, we will embark on our run! There will be options for runs that are either 2 miles or 4 miles, looping along the Charles River, over the Harvard Bridge, starting and ending at the Patagonia Cambridge store.

Once we’ve returned, attendees can chat and shop while enjoying snacks and light refreshments. Attendees will also be entered into a raffle with the chance to win a Patagonia giveaway item!

Swimming in the Charles River, once a distant fantasy, has become a realistic possibility in recent years...

Attend the inaugural Clean Charles Convening to hear from the scientists, resource managers, and advocates working to understand, protect, and improve the Charles River ecosystem.

Join the conversation about what it would take to go from one or two swim events per year to bringing beaches back to the Lower Charles River.

The Charles River Watershed Association is currently seeking two positions to add to our growing team!

The Climate Resilience Manager will work with the Charles River Climate Compact (CRCC) to design and implement regional climate adaptation projects and collaborate with individual watershed communities on local climate projects.

The Volunteer and Engagement Associate manages CRWA’s hundreds of volunteers, engaging them in special events, and hands-on clean up and restoration efforts across the Charles River watershed, while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams on community events.

Yesterday, we hosted our Meet Your Watershed: Birdwatching Trip with MassBays Birdwatching Club! The afternoon walk through Red Wing Bay was filled with Red-bellied woodpecker calls, Catbird glimpses, and Black-capped chickadee sightings. What a great reminder of all that lives in the Charles River watershed 🦆

The Cyanobacteria Bloom Advisory in the Lower Basin of the Charles River, downstream of the Boston University Duan Family Center for Computing & Data Sciences Building (aka “Jenga Tower”), has officially been lifted!

Two rounds of sampling by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), one week apart, revealed cyanobacteria levels were below the DPH threshold at all sampling locations. The toxin was not detected in any sample.

This means you can now get back to safely recreating on the Charles River!
