Today marks the second year Expedition Empower will be partnering with Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation (CPARF) and taking the STEPtember Challenge! We’re thrilled to be stepping up again to support CPARF and the mission of Expedition Empower, and we hope you’ll join us to get active and connect with us all month long.

By stepping with us, any way you move is a good way to move, and you can choose from nearly 80 activities to meet your goal — whether it equals 10,000 steps or another goal that works for you.

By fundraising with us, you’ll support research and innovation for people with cerebral palsy — from babies getting the diagnosis and early therapies they need, to technology that makes everyday life easier for adults, to initiatives that ensure people get the care they need no matter where they live in the US.

You’ll be bringing science to life and changing what’s possible for 18 million people with cerebral palsy worldwide.

In addition, 70% of the money raised will help support Expedition Empower's mission to connect individuals living with a disability to nature.

Let’s step up together! To learn more and join our team, visit https://www.steptember.us/fundraisers/EXPEDITIONEMPOWER

Happy stepping!!

Today is the last day of STEPtember and our team had an amazing time this month moving and fundraising for the cause. If you haven’t had a chance to support this great event, today at 12pm ET, donations will be doubled for 24 hours or until the $50,000 matching cap is reached. This is a great opportunity for you to support advancing cerebral palsy research and our efforts at Expedition Empower. No matter what, we want to thank everyone who joined and donated to this year’s STEPtember. You all are rockstars! Keep on stepping! : )

Today is Norwood Day, a day that celebrates the wonderful community of Norwood, Massachusetts including its local businesses and nonprofits. Expedition Empower was incorporated in Norwood so our awesome board members Steve and Brian are working the both this year’s event and discussing all things

If you are in the area, feel free to visit us, we’d love to talk with you. The event is taking place in the Norwood Common, through the uptown Washington Street area to Guild Square (including East Cottage Street).

STEPtember is almost halfway over and the STEPtember team is crushing their daily steps! Today, board member Phil Berenz decided to get his steps in by doing what he loves, exploring a new trail and outdoor area!

If you are thinking about donating to our team, starting tomorrow (September 14th) at noon is a great time to do so, all donations will be doubled until STEPtember meets the $150,000 match. Double your impact and help two nonprofits at the same time!

We are excited to announce that we’re partnering with Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation (CPARF) and taking the STEPtember Challenge! It will be our first year stepping up as a nonprofit partner and we look forward to raising funds and awareness for Expedition Empower and cerebral palsy.

You may or may not know but two of our board members were born with cerebral palsy so this is a cause near and dear to our hearts.

We are proud that our STEPtember participation will not only support our mission but will also move cerebral palsy research forward. We hope that you will join us! STEPtember is totally virtual. It’s a great way for us to come together as a community, raise our heartbeats, and much needed funds for cerebral palsy.

Through this partnership, Expedition Empower will receive 70% of all donations made to our STEPtember team and 30% will go to CPARF. Support our work by supporting our team! Let’s make a difference together! To learn more, please click the link below. If you have any questions about STEPtember, CPARF, or Expedition Empower, do not hesitate to reach out.

We are beyond excited to announce a collaboration with The Mindful Tourist In July, board members and will begin TMT’s shinrin-yoku guide training.

Shinrin-yoku is a method of taking in the forest through our senses which was developed in Japan in the 1980s. It’s a method that has been greatly studied and is scientifically proven to help people connect with nature and experience it’s health benefits.

Through this collaboration, with the help of The Mindful Tourist, it is Expedition Empower’s goal to create an adaptive version of shinrin-yoku that can be tailored to any disability. In our opinion, the ability to connect with nature lives in all of us and we hope to make that ability easily accessible to all. More to come, stay tuned!

Board member recently met up with Phil on his travels in California. They were very fortunate to visit Camp Tuolumne Trails. Tuolumne Trails is a camp for individuals with special medical needs, located on 80 beautiful acres of Sierra Nevada wilderness outside the mountain community of Groveland, California near the grandeur of Yosemite National Park. The facilities are fully-accessible and in our opinion world class. Huge shout out to and .m for providing a fantastic tour of the facilities and so much helpful information on how to properly run a camp for individuals with special medical needs. We can’t thank you enough!

Everyone, please go follow .trails . This organization is run by an extremely caring, and thoughtful group of people. If you live in California, we recommend checking out their website to learn about their offerings and how you can help!

We are happy to partner with in an effort to help make accurate accessible trail information available and known to all. The accessibility team at AllTrails is a remarkable group who are working hard to document accessibility information of trails throughout the world.
This endeavor is bigger than any one organization or individual. It takes a team of organizations and individuals and we are happy to do our part.
How can you help? If you have any GPX recordings from using a Garmin or recording app, or descriptions of routes you have found accessible for any type of disability, we highly encourage you to share that information with the AllTrails team at [email protected]
Pro-tip: there are two ways you can view wheelchair friendly trails for your state via the AllTrails site. First, you can search by state and then filter using the wheelchair friendly tag. Second, we have created lists of wheelchair friendly trails for each state (last updated on May 16th, 2021). The link to the lists is located here: www.expeditionempower.org/trailpost
Definitely check it out!
We appreciate any information you may have! This is one of the many ways you can help make outdoors for all a reality.

Happy Earth Day everyone! Today is a good reminder that we all are a part of the earth. Nature is all around us even if we don’t notice it. Without it, we would not exist. Our connection to nature is in our DNA. Take a moment today to get outside and appreciate the nature around you. That can be a flower in your front yard, your local park or even a slight breeze in the air. We are curious, what is your favorite local nature spot? We’d love to hear about it!

It’s National Park week and we’d like to talk about one of the National Park System’s best benefits! If you are an US citizen or permanent resident living with a permanent disability (does not have to be a 100% disability) you can get a free, lifetime pass that provides admittance to more than 2,000 recreation sites managed by five Federal agencies including national parks.

The pass may be obtained in person at a federal recreation site or through the mail using an application form. There is a $10 fee to process the application. There are two pieces of required documentation: A copy of ID issued by an authorized U.S. agency such as your driver's license, passport or state-issued ID and documentation that proves permanent disability such as:

Statement by a licensed physician (Statement must include: that the individual has a PERMANENT disability, that it limits one or more aspects of their daily life, and the nature of those limitations.)

Document issued by Federal agency such as the Veteran's Administration, Social Security Disability Income or Supplemental Security Income

Document issued by a state agency such as a vocational rehabilitation agency

It is a fairly quick and easy process. We recommend emailing or calling your primary care physician who can send you a digital letter. This part of the process will vary depending on your health care provider.

Scroll through the photos to preview some of the beautiful and amazing places you can visit for free! If you have any questions about the pass, leave a comment and we’ll do our best to provide an answer.
