Women are leading the work of justice across the nonprofit sector, but are our institutions living up to the equity they champion?

Candid's 2026 Nonprofit Compensation Report highlights a troubling reality: while the gender pay gap among nonprofit CEOs has narrowed overall, progress has stalled, and the gap is widest among the largest organizations.

As YW Boston President & CEO Aba Taylor put it:
“These findings underscore the troubling reality that often our own institutions are not immune from the very inequities we work to address.”

Her words are a powerful reminder that equity must extend beyond our missions and into the way we lead, govern, and compensate the people doing the work.

If we want to build a more just sector, we have to practice justice within our own institutions.
