During National EMS Week, we honor the professionals who provide us with emergency medical services and save countless lives every day. EMS workers put their lives in harm’s way to save our lives. They are the first responders who show up before anyone else in times of crisis.

AFSCME Local 2948 members with MassWildlife help hatch, raise, and stock nearly 500,000 brook, brown, rainbow, and tiger trout in 450 lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams across Massachusetts.

This year’s fish are bigger and better than ever. While the quantity of stocked trout (measured in total pounds) has remained about the same for the last decade, MassWildlife has been steadily producing larger trout by adjusting hatchery growing techniques. Just ten years ago, less than 60% of stocked trout were over 12 inches—now, over 80% measure over a foot!

If you are one of the thousands of Massachusetts residents or visitors who will enjoy the thrill of catching a trout this spring, know that before that fish ended up on the end of your line it was the hard work of dedicated AFSCME members with Local 2948 who helped put it there and Local 2948 and 3485 who work at and maintaining our state parks. While the MassWildlife Technicians cannot reel it in for you, their hard work and dedication makes sure that the fish are there for the public to enjoy.

This spring, MassWildlife will stock trout in over 450 lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams in 264 towns across Massachusetts!
