In Springfield, a three-bedroom home originally built in 1919 was unfortunately left vacant for several years. But thanks to a grant, a local nonprofit was able to renovate the property and add it into the city’s affordable housing stock. The home is now being sold to a low-income family through the city’s affordable housing lottery.

A successful program requires active participation and feedback from residents, which is why the annual public hearing is such an important component of CPA. This interactive “spending priorities” board created by the Somerville Community Preservation Committee and the Open House event in Chelsea are excellent examples of how local CPC’s can gather public opinion on local goals and priorities for CPA.

Check out the Coalition website for more examples of how different CPA communities are connecting with their residents:

“[Pok Oi Residences] is an example of what private and public partnerships can accomplish to address housing needs.” – Emily Bouton, Beacon Communities

Last year, the City of Boston crossed the finish line on the 85-unit Pok Oi Residences in the Chinatown neighborhood. This six-story housing development received a $2M grant in 2022, and now that this work has been completed, the building hosts a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments for low-income families.
