Our students, in Boston and all over Massachusetts, can't afford to lose the teachers and support staff that are helping them learn and thrive every day.

“Teachers aren’t being allowed to teach,” Kryk said. “When a teacher is essentially handcuffed to a certain program — even if the program isn’t working, or that child has been using that program from kindergarten to, say, seventh grade — you don’t have that authority to make that instructional decision that maybe I should use something else to help this child.”

Ward Wooden, a Los Angeles eighth grader, recently sat at a table in his backyard waiting for an animation on i-Ready to finish so he could answer geometry questions on his school-issued laptop. He had seen the introductory cartoon — which flashes a car, flowers, a blender, an alligator and more over a jazzy drumbeat — hundreds of times before, but he couldn’t skip it.

“I think it’s supposed to serve as a break or something interesting to keep you engaged, but all it does is waste more time,” he said.

A growing number of families and educators say they’re fed up with i-Ready’s personalized math and reading lessons.

Great news! Thanks to everyone who called, wrote or lobbied for the Protect Act! The MA Senate yesterday voted 37 to 3 to pass the PROTECT Act, which takes important steps to protect immigrant communities in Massachusetts, such as banning new 287(g) agreements, preventing law enforcement from asking about immigration status or using resources for civil immigration enforcement, limiting information sharing with ICE, protecting courthouses and other sensitive locations, and more.

The MA Senate today voted 37 to 3 to pass the PROTECT Act, which takes important steps to protect immigrant communities in Massachusetts, such as banning new 287(g) agreements, preventing law enforcement from asking about immigration status or using resources for civil immigration enforcement, limiting information sharing with ICE, protecting courthouses and other sensitive locations, and more.

TY to all the advocates, activists, and legislators who worked on this and for everyone who has been pushing for these protections for more than a decade!

After four efforts to weaken the bill, Republicans Patrick O'Connor (R-Weymouth) and Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester) joined Democrats in voting for it.
