Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day and honor the history, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, past and present. Here in Whatcom County, we acknowledge the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Indian Tribe and celebrate the Indigenous communities who continue to enrich our region.

Our volunteer tutors play an important role in helping adults strengthen their English and literacy skills. They meet with learners, encourage them through challenges, celebrate their progress, and help turn goals into accomplishments.

During Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, we’re grateful for every volunteer, supporter, and community partner who helps make free adult literacy education possible in Whatcom County.

What can literacy skills make possible?

A stronger resume.
A new job opportunity.
The confidence to help your child with homework.
The ability to read to your children.
Passing the U.S. citizenship exam.
Navigating everyday life with greater independence.

Adult education is about so much more than learning in a classroom—it’s about opening doors and creating opportunities.

It’s Adult Education and Family Literacy Week!

This week, we’re celebrating the power of adult education and the people who make it possible: including our learners, volunteer tutors, instructors, and supporters here in Whatcom County.

At Whatcom Literacy Council, we provide free adult literacy programs that help adults strengthen their English skills, build confidence, navigate everyday life, and reach their personal and professional goals.

Adult education works, and we’re proud to be part of it!
